New Donkey

HI I AM NEW HERE. I JUST WANTED TO SHARE MY LONGEARED STORY.

I WENT OUT TO FEED OUR 2 HORSES AND HEARED THIS AWFUL NOISE. SO I WALKED BACK TO THE BACK FIELD AND SAW SOMETHING OVER IN THE BACK CORNER BY THE FENCE. IT WAS ALMOST DARK SO I WALKED OVER TO GET A BETTER LOOK. THE PEOPLE BEHIND US HAVE COWS SO I THOUGHT IT WAS ONE OF THEIR CALVES. AS I GOT CLOSER I COULD SEE IT WAS A LITTLE RED DONKEY ALL TANGLED UP IN THE FENCE. I EASED UP TO HIM AND SLOWLY UNTANGLED HIS FRONT LEGS. INSTEAD OF GOING BACKON THE OTHER SIDE HE COME ON THREW. I LEAD HIM UP TO THE BARN AND PUT HIM IN A STALL SO MY HORSES WOULD NOT HURT HIM, JUMPED IN THE TRUCK AND DROVE OVER TO THIER HOUSE. tHEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE A DONKEY. NOW THEIR COW FIELD SURRONDS MY PASTURE ON 3 SIDES. I SID OK AND WENT BACK HOME. CALLED THE SHERRIFF'S DEPARTMENT TO SEE IF ANY ONE HAD REPORTED HIM MISSING. THEY SAID NO AND THEY COULD HAVE SOME ONE COME PICK HIM UP AS A STRAY. I TOLD THEY LADY THAT I COULD KEEP HIM AT MY HOUSE AND WOULD TRY TO FIND HIS OWNER. IF I HAD NO LUCK I WOULD CALL HER BACK. FOR 3 DAYS I LOOKED FOR HIS OWNER WITH NO LUCK. SO I LOADED HIM UP AND TOOK HIM TO THE VET TO HAVE HIM SCANNED FOR A CHIP AND HE HAD ONE , GOT THE PEOPLES NUMBER AND THEY LIVE LIKE 2 MILES AWAY THREW THE WOODS. I LOADED HIM UP AND TOOK HIM HOME. AFTER WE GOT THERE AND I TALKED TO THE MAN A LITTLE WHILE I TOLD HIM THAT WE HAD BONDED OVER THE PAST COUPLE DAYS SO HE TOLD ME I COULD HAVE HIM IF I WANTED HIM. SO WE LOADED HIM BACK UP AND I BROUGHT MY LITTLE DONK-DONK HOME. HE IS SO FRIENDLY. HE TALKS TO ME WHEN I COME OUT THE BACK DOOR OF THE HOUSE, LOVES TO BE PETTED AND WILL FOLLOW ME AROUND ALL OVER THE PLACE. NOW HERE COMES MY QUESTION, ONE OF OUR HORSES IS GOING TO HAVE A BABY IN MARCH. DO I NEED TO BE CONCERNED AFTER SHE HAS THE BABY AND WE TURN THEM OUT IN TO THE PASTURE? DO DONKEYS NORMALY MESS WITH BABY HORSES ? I AM NEW TO THE DONKEY THING SO I AM JUST CURIOUS.

Not sure about your question as I am a new donkey owner myself. Is he gelded or is he still a Jack? That might have some influence on how he will react.

Also other general questions for curiosities sake - about how tall is he and do you know his age? Whatcha going to name him?

and of course...

He WILL Be Gelded This Coming Saturday. My Vet Said He Is About 4 Years Old . He Is Really Small. I Have Not Measured Him But I Would Say Maybe 40 Inches. All Of My Pics Are To Big To Up Load Here So I Am Going Work On That And Try To Get Some Up. His Name Is Donk- Donk But My Daughter Calls Him Joe So We Will Probably End Up Calling Him Joe.

Congratulations on your new donkey addition! I love the name Donk-Donk. We've never left male donkeys or mules with mares and new foals. Our male mules have been aggressive with foals (they play waaay to rough) and the mare mules want to take the foals. Just our experience - others on the board may feel differently.

I only have one donkey, so I can only speak for him, and he's a gelding... When my mare foaled, one of the first things I did was turn him out with her and the foal. He never bothered either her or the foal, and she seemed to like his company. He's kind of at the bottom of the pecking order in my herd, but is protective against coyotes and unfamiliar dogs, which is why I put him in with them.

Here's a May picture of the 3 of them. Gus, the donkey, is just starting to shed his winter coat, and it's also wet from the rain, so don't mind his shaggy 'do

Thank You!
He Is 41 And 1/2 Inches. The Gelding Went Ok But He Was Very Mad At Me. He Would Not Love On Me For A Couple Of Days. But He Is Back To His Sweet Old Self Now.

Glad to hear it went well, and he was only upset with you for a couple days . May you have many happy years with him!
