Plushie has Tetanus PICS

I'm so upset. I'm sick of this- I'm sick of this heartache. I'm beating myself up- I should have got the vac myself but relying on the REAL owner of these donkeys is useless. Plushie was fine one minute, then "off" the next. I checked her over. Her jaw was locked. Her backlegs stiff. I knew what I was dealing with but it's my first time.

I had my nurse aid class but instead Mom and I loaded Plushie into the cab of the truck and rushed to the vet. $143 later- she has a 20% chance of survival. All over a $9 vaccine.

Pez is getting the short term vac tomorrow.

The vet is on call for euthansia if worse comes to worse. I don't want her to suffer. We called the nieghbors (They own them) His wife says "I didn't know we even had baby donkeys. My husband didn't even tell me."

Send prayers and good thoughts our way. I'm so angry at myself for this...

I am so sorry and will be wishing for the best. Don't beat yourself up over it. I would have thought such a young one would have had some immunity from her Mom.

I know there's probably no one up this time of night.

Plushie is such a fighter. I'm checking on her every 15 minutes. A few times she's been laying and her muscles are so rigid she can't get back up. I pick her front end up and allow her to put her back end down. She'll walk off and go nurse. I'm amazed at her will. It has to hurt so bad dispite the meds she has been given. I've also been syriging her mana milk just to make sure she has enough energy.

I'm so worried. I know the prognosis is grim. My vet is very honest and told me NOT to get my hopes up.

Has anyone had expirence with tetanus? How long does this last? If she makes it- when will she be in the clear?

Thanks HT for your support. I feel horrible. It's not my donkey but her "owners" haven't even ever met her. I lost sleep for a whole month waiting for her birth. When she was born I was the first to pet her, the first human she ever saw. I don't want to lose her. She's such a little fighter.

I am so sorry for what you are going through. I don't have any advice for you as I haven't dealt with tetanus. Sending best wishes, lots of hugs and both you and Plushie will be in our thoughts. Please keep us updated.

Don't give up hope !

I too had a sick foal, mine was in ICU at the Vet College hospital for almost 2 weeks. But she pulled though and Plushie can too !

I know exactly how you feel. Its a punch in the gut. Just stay focused and do what you can.

All of our thoughts and prayers are with you and your baby. Don't give up !

BIG HUGS sent your way!

I am so sorry to hear that Plushie is sick! {{{{{{{{PRAYERS AND HUGS}}}}}}}} for both of you. I've never dealt with tetnus so have no advice. Really, something needs done about the ownership of these donks. I can't believe they didn't even know they had babies. They must never come to see them. Will they let you buy them?

Iam sorry I have to agree with your vet though. We've not had tetnus in the horses but have with kid goats. They do get some imunity through the dams but it's not always enough. With the goats they have gotten massive doses of Anti-toxin and been kept in the dark with little stimulis unfortunatly we've never had one survive. Horses are carriers of Tetnus and while we are carefull to vaccinate all the goats yearly sometimes a new purchase will slip through the cracks....not everbody vaccinates.

Good Luck I know this is hard having been through it

I wonder if you might want to post a thread out in the health and nutrition forum. There may be more folks looking at that so you might get more of a response. Thinking of you and Plushie and hoping for the best.

Chic- I wish I could buy them. We spend SO much on thier upkeep, we can't afford it. The best we can do is talk him into selling off some (we may get a small cut of it.) and control the breeding. When we moved in the herd sire was running with the Jennys!

We have sectioned off our property into paddock after paddock, seperating the foals, the jennys, the herd sires, the yearling jack, ect ect.

I love these animals and I don't want to lose this little girl. She's still alive this morning. Were combating with high doses of penicillin. I was up until 6am with her til mom got up and took over. If she lays down she can't get back up. Thank god she's small enough to pick up.

Prayers for you little one, and many blessings for you! Sounds to me like they needn't own these little critters, or any for that matter. Sad for them. Thankfully they have you.
