Corn Cobs?!

I had a question for you fellow donkey/mule lovers. Has anyone ever fed their animals corn cobs? My donkey is on my grandparents farm. Well my grandma insists on giving Jaxson corn cobs! To me that just scares me too death. I would think he would choke on them. Dont you guys think so? I told her not to give him anything like that anymore at least until I could do some research. But im almost 100% sure she will not listen to me. So I am worried about him. What do you guys think about it?

I would be scared too...but more about overdoing the corn and just not being a good choice nutritionally rather than choking. I will say that when I was a kid and fed the horses what my mom dictated our horses got two ears of corn with every mean (we would go out in the corn field after the corn had been brought in and pick up all of the good, dried out ears of corn we could find for the horses to eat). Our horses never had a problem...but I wouldn't do it now.

feeding corn

The corn cobs shouldn't be harmful but if you aren't comfortable with it, do your research and GENTLY approach your Grandmother - she may be "old school" and think corn is a-okay for horses... Good luck!

Oh I have tried that but I get the "Oooooh its not goin to hurt him." Ugh. I wouldnt eat half the stuff she eats let alone what she feeds the animals sometimes lol.

Jester-This is more like a treat thing instead of an actual meal. Shes one of those that does not like to waste anything which sometimes is not a good thing.

Sorry I came in so late on this. I know of several old timers that feed corn cobs to their horses, they say that it helps to keep their teeth where they need to be, rather than floating them they'll keep giving corn cobs. Not sure how correct that is though. I haven't ever heard of one of their horses having a problem with it though.

If he's pastured alone and doesn't gobble it down I wouldn't so much worry about him choking. I'd worry more about the high starch. I've had bad luck giving my donks high energy feeds- I had a lot of issues with white line and general hoof problems when we fed feed that conatined corn. I don't see a couple really hurting him though. Corn cobs contain a ton of undigestible fiber as well, maybe tell your grandma she's wasting money since he can't digest most of contents of the cob?
