Blanketing your Donkey?!?

I read that Donkeys don't grow thick undercoats like horses do and that you should have a blanket for them just in case. Does anyone here blanket their Donkeys?? Would love to find out!! I just ordered one for my Mini Donkey because she shivers every time it rains and it's cold outside. Thanks!!

Huh. Really? My donkey turns into a shaggy beast and water just flows right off of him. I tried a blanket on him once...it didn't fit quite right and much laughter ensued!! Pretty much the only reason I put a blanket on him was because I didn't want him to be jealous of the horses.

too hard

I don't. If I had to keep track of when it rained and go and blanket them, it would be a full time job.
That's why they have a barn.
Yesterdays, the heavy rains started and they hung out in the barn. Today, I let them out, and when it started to downpour, they went running for shelter.

They know! Except the little burro who grew up in the wilderness. He still likes to hunker under a tree.

The big mammoth is a sissy when it comes to getting wet. He is the dryest of them all, and doesn't like the rain.

Cold....it always seemed to me that blanketed equines don't grow as long a winter coat as ones that aren't blanketed. The donkeys look like shaggy beasts by the spring.

I only blanket Buttercup if it's precipitating and below 40.
No precipitation = no blanket.
And even then, she often insists on not wearing it.

She gets a GINORMOUS mass of hair - never shivers.

And throw tomatoes if you wish - but I had made every effort of blanketing her before this storm came (I mean EVERY EFFORT to get that blanket on and keep it on), and she took it off:

HUGE NOTE:
She was completely dry in her undercoat, and was NOT shivering.

All that picture shows is that she is well insulated! Otherwise, the snow could not sit on them like it does...

I've never blanketed mine, usually the winters here are not too bad and they all seem to grow enough coat to provide good insulation. I think the only way I might would need to is if I have to put them in the field without a runin and it rains alot. But I don't know if they will keep one on because I've never tried putting one on them before.

Blanketing Donkeys

Depends on the weather. If it's 20 below- why not? Or, if you just want them to stay CLEAN for more than a minute
