new donkey

got a 10 yr old jenny the other day, was supposed to be for protecting the horses from coyotes but judging from the way she is with the dogs I am guessing thats not going to work well. My dogs--2 of them--have been chasing and barking at her, she doesn't even attempt to tample them etc. She will put her head down and chase them a bit but it seems to have become a game, the dogs are not biting her and I have been giving them heck when i catch them but I am not sure what else i am supposed to do. She doesnt seem overly upset by it either, she will leave the paddock if they are persistant but does not seem angry or upset by it....any ideas

oh and is it normal for the horses to be scared of her. they all seem to be scared, they have finally started coming into the paddock if she is there but wont get too close, if she goes to the shleter, they all leave, better than the first day when even my herd bosses took off like a shot but not sure what to think about this.
and she was taken from her baby when we picked her up to, would/could this be the reason for her docility? she is very people orientated and comes running when she sees you or hears the gate lol, lets hope it is the same for the ferrier next week as her feet are crappy lol

What a cutie.

Not all are dog 'haters'... but usually they do get defensive over thier "territory" and/or herd. She's new so I'd give her a chance to settle in.

Also with the horses, she looks a little different to them, but they will adjust and accept her eventually. It should also help your horses become more "well rounded"... You wouldn't believe how many horses will spook over a donkey if they've never seen one before...

Also, just a suggestion, but make sure your farrier knows how to properly trim a donkey's hoof... It's not the same as a horses, and needs to be trimmed a certain way.

Congrads, I bet she will be a blast to be around! Donkeys can have the quirkiest personalities.

My horses were scared to death of my donkey when he first arrived. Now he is part of the herd - just took some time.

As to dogs - my donkey accepted my dog pretty quickly - only half-heartily chases after her if she should go out in the field. He seemed to connect that I was with the dog, so the dog was ok. However, if strange dogs should try to venture into our field he will aggressively chase them out.

my 2 little dogs have decided to stay away but the dane and the english bulldogge are the ones barking and chasing her--not sure what to do about it--the barking drives me nuts but on the other hand i cant watch them all the time

i am also hoping she reacts like that with strange dogs--dont have many, and coyotes--we have lots, which is why i got her lol

She is adorable what is her name??? I don't know much about donkeys but I'll bet that "her" dogs are okay but strange ones won't be ... if that makes sense???

I wouldn't count her out quite yet for protecting. Our Mustang wouldn't ever think of hurting one of our dogs no matter how much they antagonize him. But yet when a strange dog dares to come in the pasture usually they can't leave fast enough.

Yep. My donk will every so often chase the dogs, but a stray dog in his field? He's AFTER that dog. They "know" what belongs and what doesn't.

And, yes, the horses will get used to the donkey!
