Changing Avatar

I can't believe it. I can help KathyK to put an Avatar picture up but can't manage to change mine. I have tried a number of times to change my Avatar and it won't let me. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dont feel bad, it usually takes me about 48 tries to get it to change.
Therefore, I cannot tell you how I do it. It's kind of a *poof* it worked! moment...

Are you using a photo or avatar that is on say photobucket or another like site, or are you using one directly uploaded from your computer?

Also, is your custom avatar button on?

Thanks Scrapchick. It is just so frustrating when I am thousands of miles away from my friend who is in Ontario and via phone I can talk her through how to do it successfully, and then I can't change mine successfully. I have always been better at advocating for others. Never for myself

Seerfarm, I am trying to upload from my Pictures on my computer. That is how we did it for my friend for the Avatar. We used photobucket for the picture she put in the body of her message.

I am using the custom button as I can't get it to not do this. If I click on the dot, it doesn't do anything.

You are using the "upload images from your computer" bar, yes?

Uh Oh, I'm not sure what you mean. When I go to the CP User, I go to Edit Avatar. I browse, pick my picture from My Pictures then go down to the save at the bottom of the page.

Nope sounds like you are doing it right, however make sure that the picture you are trying to upload isn't larger than 140 by 160 pixels or 19.5 KB.

Now that part I definately don't know how to deal with. I just assumed that it would automatically go to the size it should be.

Why is it that I can take a picture with the same camera but the pictures are at different sizes? I'm not sure how this all works.

What you can try doing if it is giving you hassels is go to photobucket, resize the photo you want to put as your avatar to avatar size and then save back onto your computer by right clicking. Then try uploading it onto HT. That should work.

I tried several times to change mine too, got that URL message also. I was trying to get a pic off PhotoBucket, then Scrappy said to try one from the computer, that still didn't work. I finally just gave up.

Yeah I can't load from photobucket either, thats why I just downsize the photo on photobucket and then right click and save back onto my comptures hard drive with the new downsized picture and upload it onto HT. I haven't had any issues doing it that way now.

This whole avatar thing is totally evil . I took GLD's suggestion and finally ffigured out how to save the photobucket pic to the computer. Then I finally found it and attached it to the computer option for the avatar choice. It came back invalid file................................I think I am not meant to ever have an avatar. I can't get one to post of another board I am on

ETA--I sure am jealous of all of you computer literate folks who not only can get an avatar up, but change it up all the time to all kinds of cute stuff--even pics and graphics. This is all greek to me----how do you do it ?!?!?!?!?!

I changed my Avatar yesterday. The box read "Invalid URL", but I was looking at the changed Avatar. When I checked it on one of the HT posts, it was the new one. Seems like I do it a different way every time I change it. Go figure.

Hey! It finally worked. I have absolutely no idea if I did anything different from all the other times I tried. But...see my silly doggie?

Congratulations. When I feel in the mood, I'll try again and if it doesn't work then I will get some help.
