HT Search Engine

I'm just wondering if we can improve on the search function in HT. No matter what I do, I usually come up with an invalid search and alot of times I would love to search on a topic to see if there is already posts that might answer my questions or give me ideas...Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I always use more than four words yet I keep getting an error...if its me then can someone tell me the correct way to get a successful search

You can search by using just one word, but it does need to have at least 4 letters in the word.

I can't do searches with quotation marks, either.
