Spelling FAQ's

I have threatened to post this a couple of times in the past, but never got around to it. How do the powers-that-be feel about it being posted? I don't mean to make fun of or demean anyone who has trouble spelling, but if they WANT to go look something up, I thought it would be nice to have handy reference thread.

Here's a rough draft, with some input from other members a long time ago.

Spelling FAQ's

This forum has been around for a while, and there are some commonly misspelled Horse-related words that I tossed together into a "Spelling FAQ's" document. Feel free to check it from time to time if you're unsure about what form of a word to use.

AD - short for advertisement, what you see on horsetopia when you click on "search horses for sale"
"I saw an ad on horsetopia for a great hinny!"

ADD - to include more of something
"I need to add something to my last post"

ADVICE - rhymes with "bad mice," refers to the guidance one person gives to another
"I need some advice please . . . "

ADVISE - rhymes with "bad guys," is the act of offering advice, typically a person would say
"Please advise me about . . . "

BITING - what a horse does to an apple, a fence, or a person, with its teeth, usually painful or damaging the object BITTEN
"I turned around, and the next thing I knew, my horse was biting me!"

BITTING - method by which a person introduces a bit to a horse, such as a curb bit or snaffle bit
"I tried bitting my horse yesterday to see how well he would take the bridle"

BOARDER - a person who boards a horse
"I was talking to one of the other boarders the other day, . . . "

BORDER - a part that forms the outer edge of something
"We rode along the entire border of my property."

BUTE - shorthand form of Phenylbutazone, a medicine commonly applied to horses to alleviate swelling
"I gave my horse some bute after he twisted an ankle"

BUTTE - a hill with a flat top
"The sun was a beautiful puple as it was setting over the butte."

BUTT - the rear-end on an animal or human
"My horse's butt makes mine look small."

CONFORMATION - the physical formation of a horse
"I looked at a brood mare the other day with excellent conformation."

CONFIRMATION - the act of confirming something; also a christian rite of passage
"The fact that she has a club foot is confirmation that she should not be bred."

HINEY - slang term for rear end
"My horse's hiney makes mine look small."

HINNY - The hybrid offspring of a male horse and a female donkey.
"Congratulate me, I just bought a hinny."

HINNEY - no such thing

LUNGE - lunged, lung·ing, lung·es -- sudden thrust or pass, as with a sword or whip. This is the correct American English spelling for what you do with your horse in a round pen.
"When I try to lunge my horse, he makes it clear that he isn't fond of lunging."

LONGE - longed, longe·ing, long·es -- sudden thrust or pass, as with a sword or whip. This is the correct British English spelling for what you do with your horse in a round pen.
"When I try to longe my horse, he makes it clear that he isn't fond of longeing."

LOUNGE - to move or act in a lazy way
"Sometimes when my horse doesn't want to lunge, he acts like he's in a lounge bar!"

"I love riding my horse!"

"I need to sell my horse."

SPIGOT - a faucet for water, or an outlet from a cask, jug, or cooler

Good reference, although I didn't realize that spelling bothered people so much. I'll try to improve.

All very helpful, especially for the mildly dyslexic, like me. Please remember that sometimes even when I've read things through, and think I've got it right, you'll get wrong words, or wrong spelling. I have though just cracked getting the spell checker to work, so hopefully that'll help. (I say this on behalf of all similarly affected (or is it effected) people)

Just one thing thought I'm English, and I've never come across the expression 'longe' until I came over here, we lunge!!

Great message! Poor spelling and typos really annoy me...I know that it's "just" a message board... and I know that we all make mistakes sometimes. I am constantly reminding my daughter that if she gets into the habit of poor spelling & grammar and 'netspeak' for internet use, it will creep over into her everyday writing.

Thanks from another dyslexic

I have dyslexic horses too...

They try bite when bitting (puting the bit in..was that spelled right???)

When I say lunge, they lounge.

When I say riding, they think ridding.

When we trail, it becomes a trial....and when I say "whoa" to the horse, they say "woe is you!"

I noticed sale and sell...what ever happened to the great word SOLD!!!

I don't think spelling counts-this is not a spelling bee and I doubt it would make it more comfortable here if people start ACTING like it is.
Sorry-but that is just not what this place is about.
If I am writing a term paper-spelling counts.
If I am rapidly typing out a post in here-just not the same. If I can't figure out what someone means,I will PM them.

See, that's what I want to avoid!!! I don't mean to make people feel bad, it's just a collection of commonly mispelled words. Heck, my ex boyfriend didn't even want to send me an email because he was afraid I'd proofread it back at him. No, I don't care that much, just trying to give people a tool if they want to use it.

Side note - that same boyfriend did propose marriage to me. He got the bright idea of inviting me to attend one of his classes, with the excuse that there was a visiting lecturer I'd be interested in (the prof and rest of class were in on it). During the class, he passed me a note saying, "_____, Will you marry me?" I'm using a blank where my name belongs, just 'cuz I like being anonymous on here. But he had also misspelled my name (genuinely by accident).

Well I don't tend to mispell because I can't spell the word, it's just my fingers get ahead of me all the time. You have no idea how many times I've spelled "thanks" wrong! Of all words! It usually gets written "thnaks" or something.

Bandit, it's amazing the human brain can process that! Spelling, or bad spelling doesn't bother me. I, also sometimes type faster than my brain works and I make errors. Sorry

I don't think Lady_MCSE is trying to critique everyone's spelling, I think she was just trying to point out the commonly mis-used words, such as using the word PHILLY (a sandwich), as opposed to FILLY (a young female horse). Of course we can all figure out what someone is trying to say, but some people honestly may not know that they are using the right word.
