Medicine hat paint legend?

A friend and I were talking about horsey legends the other day, and because my horse is a medicine hat paint, we started talking about that. I haven't been able to find much information on the legend of what it was that made medicine hat paints so special... does anyone know anything that they could share?

Hmm...I seem to recall hearing that several tribes of Native Americans would only allow a medicine man to own one.

Thanks!! Well, I hope it's not that the medicine hat's invincible... my horse is a perfect example of a med. hat, but he certainly gets himself into all sorts of messes! But thanks everyone for the information!

Well, according to "San Domingo, the Medicine Hat Stallion" by Marguerite Henry, "The Indians believe such a horse is sacred -- that neither bullet nor arrow can harm its rider."

"The name "Medicine Hat" is the English translation of 'Saamis' (SA-MUS)- the Blackfoot word for the eagle tail feather headdress worn by medicine men - or 'Medicine Hat'."

regarding medicine hats

my favorite is medicine hat quote is

Protected are those who are loved by a medcine hat for no harm will come to them.

The indians believed that no harm could come to their riders and usually only chiefs or great warriors were the only ones who usuall owned them.

Ah, that's a Sioux (I forget which sub-tribe - either the Lakota or Hunkpapa) custom involving the curly horses which were referred to as the wakkan tanka or sankha tanka or sankha wakkan tanka.

Sankha wakkan tanka or something like sankha wakkan t'tanka IIRC translates literally to "mysterious (sacred) animal (possibly 'sacred dog)" in the first term and colloquially "pony sacred to the buffalo" in the second term.

I'll have to check out both legends with a Sioux friend of mine who might be able to shed some light on it.

Unfortunately, I having some Sioux ancestry in there didn't translate into cultural knowledge on this subject.

Just found this on the fly: http://www.sicc.sk.ca/saskindian/a88oct16.htm

Here's a good selection in a google search: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=...c6be010d2 57f

No idea on the medicine hat paint legend, but I thought you might like my paint mare's name: Wiyo wetu tate

It's Lakota for Painted Spring Wind.

Next time I talk to her breeder, I'll have to ask about the medicine hat legend.

Lightbulb always wondered this myself

I've heard a few different stories regarding the fabled "Medicine hat paint", but yeah, the reasons why were already covered in the preceding posts.

I sure hope it's true about "no harm to it's rider", because my own personal medicine hat paint horse is um... "high spirited" for sure
