Unhappy Update. It hit her. Hurricane Gustav and Lucky.

Well guys I had to make the heart breaking decision to put Lucky, Claire's new pony, down yesterday. If you had read the thread Hurricane Gustav you know that 2 of my horses sustained injuries from a tornado hitting a nearby shed and throwing the metal through the pasture my horses were in. The lsu vets came out Wed and told me to call back Fri if Lucky was not walking better. I called Fri evening and they said to bring him in Sat morning. When we got there Lucky was in a lot of pain and they found the tendon had ruptured all the way to the tendon sheath. They said he may make a recovery but the chances were very slim and he would never be pain free. There was no way I could be selfish and make him live that way and go through all what he would have to, to see if he would even walk again. So I told Claire he was in pain and needed to go see Jesus where he would be pain free and able to run again. She said ok and has not cried yet but does talk about him. I am not sure if it has hit her yet. When we returned the trailer to the pasture she kept telling me that "Rocky" the other pony would really miss him and did not understand why he was not back home. So we spent most of the night talking about it and me trying to get her to tell me how she felt. It is simply an awful feeling when we have looked so long and hard to find this one pony, only to lose him soon afterward. Lsu was wonderful and really took care of us. So I do thank them for that.

Oh my goodness. I am so sorry. I could not imagine telling my kids that! How awful. Of course there must be something better in the making for her./ There is a reason for everything. At least he is running in green pastures now and free from pain.

Thanks everyone. Lets just hope Ike does not head for us. I don't think I could handle another one of these right now. Last update is still no power for 2 to 3 weeks and that is pushing it. That also means no school. If Ike does head this way the horses are out of here. What is left of the shed is still there , they have not begun removing it yet.

I have a friend that called me today and said he can get ahold of a mare that is about 23 and in her younger days showed western pleasure and the owner said Claire can use her. My friend is going to pick her up and ride her for a few weeks just to tune her up. That was really nice.

I know there was a reason for what happened I just don't know what it is.

Most deepest of sympathies coming from all of us here at The Dragan's Lair.

Big {{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}} for you and your daughter.

Kentucky may be a stretch away, but there is always room in my barns for safety.

Oh Sam, I am so sorry. Hug Claire from me. I will ask around, there is a pony where I board that really need a kid..if you would be interested, I will see if he is still for sale, he would need a good rider as he tends to be pushy(you know like a pony)
