36 was a long life...

This week my appaloosa mare lost the only friend I have ever known her to truly have. Lex is in her 20's and Casey made it to the ripe old age of 36. Yesterday morning he just decided was his time. He was quite old with all his faculties - she much younger but with failing sight and hearing. They worked so beautifully as a team - he was her ears and eyes and she his strength!

She has had many pasture mates through the years, but she never attached herself to any really. She spent much of her time in proximity to the rest but not really interacting or even acknowledging their presence. Then she met Casey earlier this year.

He was definitely the exception to her loner rules. Maybe because he felt so strongly about her that she decided he would be safe to love and trust too? Regardless, they were inseperable and she truly relaxed and was at peace with him. From the day he arrived, one was never without the other and they just seemed to make each other whole. So Tuesday as he parted this world Lex grieved and has called to him yesterday and today. She has laid where he passed from this world to the next and she has walked the pastures looking for him.

All 11 horses said their goodbyes but Lexi, as are all of us involved with Casey, is forever changed.

God Bless and keep you big guy and dont forget to come and tell Lexi it's time for dinner - you know she never hears us!

That's so sad, poor Lex. My sympathies for your loss, Casey must have been quite a grand old fellow.

Thank you for all the nice messages. Casey moved on to greener pastures where he can walk without stumbling, his teeth work again and hay is plentiful, delicious and he can chew it. I hope in his time with her he opened Lexi's heart to find others she can befriend. He truly really had an impact on her - Together they were an amazing (not to mention funny) duo. So I know he is at peace now but I mourn for her loss.

Poor Lexi. I feel so bad for her. I know we shouldn't attach human emotions to animals, but I believe they feel alot of the things we do. Tell her not to worry , he is watching over her still. Give her a hug for me. RIP Casey.

Poor Lexi.I just lost my old gelding this year also. He was 34 and his companion (Angel, who is 19), had been together since Angel was 4 months. They were together.....always. I also have 2 other horses who Angel would have nothing to do with. The morning we woke up to find old Beau had passed away, Angel stood by his side until he was buried and then stood by his grave for 2 days. Little by little she started trying to be friends with the younger 2 horses. At first they wanted nothing to do with her. They were afraid of her as she had always chased them away from Beau. After 3-4 weeks, all three were best buddies. Now you see all three together all the time. I feel better now that she has friends and i hope Lexi will warm up to your other horses.

I am happy to report that Lex is starting to be her old self again. She still comes in to the barn but now avoids 'their corner' where earlier in the week she had been coming in and laying where he passed. She is also hanging out with the older mare who adopted her and Casey towards the end. It's a win for them both to have each other. They both still seem to be adjusting but progress has been made.
