Sugar's Training Journal

Well....we are trying to get something together for next year's show time.

I have never actually gotten out and worked Sugar...just have done mostly trails.

I have a HUGE front yard...and I got out the other day and mowed myself an "arena".

I thought I would keep a journal of our progress.

Today was a nice day to start.

Right before a summer shower...so the air was nice and cool.

Walked around and warmed up a bit...and I am thinking to myself....this is going to be a lot of work!

Sugar really has never had to "work" before...and I know nothing of western pleasure.....how to teach head set and so on.

We are working on cues. She does fairly well....you don't have to cue her much with you heels...unless she is being stubborn.

Set out in a nice jog!

What??? Since when did Sugar have a jog? Did she actually know I meant business????

So we spent the next 45 minutes or so at a jog pace.

Several times going around the turns...she would break her gait....back down to a walk...and I had to squeeze her back up.

But...she did good.

We even did small circles and figure eights at a jog????

A nice slow smooth jog even!

We did not attempt a lope...as for what I know...she does not have a lope.

So I have to work on that.

I need to work on getting her to neck rein.

She still does some slight direct rein.

I can almost hold the reins in one hand.....and get her to turn.

But we are not there yet.

Anyways....I assume...practice makes perfect.

it is just going to take a lot of repetition.

And a lot of work.

But we have a whole year...so plenty of time.

I have soooo got to get some clippers!

But really...I like it.

It looks real good from the saddle too!

I almost did the same to Blondie! But then I was tackled by a mysterious gnome who stole the scissors from my hand.

And then I woke up!

Well we are looking forward to Sugar's training journal. I am not much help when it comes to WP but luckily you know we have a few experts floating around here to help! I am just not one of them.

Me neither. I am just hoping to get through a walk/trot/canter class and not look like an idiot!

I'm sorta in the same boat with getting Lady for open shows next year, and now I'm considering Candy in some open shows too. Just for fun. I just have to figure it all out myself and try to teach the horses...so I for one will be reading your journal to get ideas. Best of luck to you.
