Oh wow that is a tough one...

This one pops to mind because it is so recent and has so much meaning. My newest addition Belle or BT Mabelles Legacy was born on my birthday and two days after my grandmother passed away. When BT called me at 4:30 in the morning to let me know that Belle was born I rushed out to see her. When I came into the stall she left her Dam and I had bent down and she crawled inbetween my legs, threw her head over my shoulder, buckled her front legs and gave me the biggest hug I have ever had. Now this special little filly was named in honour of my Grandmother Mabelle Morley who passed away on April 10th. Belle followed me everywhere that day and nuzzled me and just let me know that it was ok. It was something I really needed when I was so terribly down.

When I was younger, I entered a "parent-leadline class" at a show. I was on the ground and my dad rode my old gelding Chief - It was walk / trot and a lot of fun. We ended up winning the class...

I have to say I have a number of memorable moments to do with my horses. The first one is getting my first horse as an Adult. Second and this was a very special moment, was getting my little PMU Mare as a weanling. She was so tiny and scrawny and when I found out she was mine, I fell in love. That was Bugsie who is now living with another Horsetopian.

Thirdly, my new found type of trail riding here on Vancouver Island, B.C. has been sooooo enjoyable and I have had some awsome times.

My most memorable human moments were the birth of my Children and then my Grandchildren.

Ok, my most memorable horse moment,....,
I was riding my first horse, Gypsy, and were trailriding with a friend.
My friend and I always raced each other, and I ALWAYS held Gypsy back, and Poco ALWAYS won. So, this day, we come out of the woods and Gypsy takes OFF. So I let her run a bit, but we are approaching a highway, and I go to pull her up and she won't STOP, and she WON"T turn. Some I'm thinking, "OK, what to do? If we turn one way, she's going to run right into a piece of chain separating the trail from the hwy. If we turn in the other direction, I'm going to get hung up on a tree and get a broken neck, or killed, and either way, she's going to end up on a major hwy.
All of sudden she hits the brakes, HERE"S THE MEMORABLE PART.
I go up in the air, over her head, and LAND on my FEET, FACING HER.
I could have NEVER PULLED THAT MOVE OFF IN A MILLION YEARS.
I figured she made her point that day, STOP holding me back!!
I got on, my legs were shaking uncontrollably, and I LIGHTLY scolded her a little bit, but NEVER made her stay behind again.
I have many other memorable moments, but that was a move I couldn't have intentionally pulled off if you had paid me!! RB

PS. AND STILL had the reins in hand, mind you

Redboy, that was sooo funny. Can we have a picture of that? Ooops, this was not planned so I guess there was no picture. Darn it.

My former horse, Boots, was my best friend for over 20 years....I can remember every year on New Year's Day going to the barn or field to give him an extra treat and hug and wish him a Happy Birthday (since I didn't know his actual BD). He lived to be 30 years old.

My worst memory (that haunts me still after 8 years) was the day I held him while the vet euthanized him. She didn't want me to be the one but I insisted because I knew he trusted me and we had been through so much together. I owed it to him to be there.

Awww Valerie62 that was a sweet but sad story. Isn't it lovely to be so close to an animal that you want to be there right until the end. Good for you for being so brave and kind to your loved one.

I was trail riding in the Sierras(on horses from a trail riding outfit) at a time when all I knew how to ride was trail horses (i.e extremely limited experience!!I was probably around 10). We were nearing the end of the ride and the guide took us down a steep hill. Well, I must have been leaning forward or something because my horse started picking up speed down this hill, eventually hitting a full gallop. I remember going by the guide and seeing horror in his face as I bounced down the hill past him...long story short no balance or skill=me on the ground and rolling as my horse runs away. That experience stuck with me for a LONG time. I still get a little nervous when I go down hills!

Oh WOW kshnooks, I'm surprised you ever got back on a horse after that!!! Mind you, I'm still riding and remember some horrific stories of my younger days, so I guess we are just crazy or just love horses too much. I like to think the latter.

Favorite horse moment…

When my Morgan Mare really and truly mine.

After 6 years of silent hopes and prayers.
After 6 years of knowing her, riding her over hill and dale. 6 years of taking care and loving her.

I pulled the papers out of the mailbox and there is was,
My name, as owner embossed with a shiny gold seal.

I knew that she was really and truly forever mine and no one would ever take her away from me.

But of course with Morgan horses do you ever really own them??

REsting my head on Katrina's back, all covered in horse manure, while Sassy's sitting there sniffing my hair, obviously looking for treats. IDK why but moments like that make up for all the bruises and sprains. I just love being able to trust something completly

My favorite horse moment would be,when my parents were terminally ill and I was their care taker,I would be so sad knowing I was loosing not only my parents but my best friends as well. I would head to the pasture, crawl up on a round bale of hay and here would come my horses running and they all would gathered around me putting their heads in my lap, consoling me.It's as if they knew I needed some TLC. What grand creatures..who needs a shrink when you gotta horse!

My favorite horse moment was when my horse Buck and I decided to go for a gallop

I was galloping him up a hill when he suddenly stopped in mid gallop up the hill, right as I looked up to see why he stopped, two moose bulls came running down the hill at us! I turned his butt around so fast and put him into a gallop! After going a half mile or so, I turned him around to see where the bull mooses had gone too, they were fighting in the trees over a cow, who was up at the top of the hill. Later, I found out they had been fighting in a neighbors yard so the neighbor had spooked them down the hill I was galloping up!

That was the most thrilling time of my life!

Mine is kinda long . . .

My husband of 21 years had just left me for a woman young enough to be our daughter and said some devastating things when he left, my boss was trying to ruin my career (she was later put on leave for mental illness), and my doctor said I was going to need back surgery.

Every summer I worked at the Maryland Renaissance Festival doing the joust show. Before the jousts we did games and stunts on horseback. I was always the only girl, and the crowds wanted me to win, but the truth was I wasn't all that good at the games, and my little appy mare didn't like them. But we had a lot of fun every year.

But that one bad year I was doing better at the games than I had ever done before, for some unknown reason. Several times I beat the guys who were pretty good, and once or twice I even beat the guy who was the best one. One show that best rider and I both got perfect scores, so he suggested we have a ride off with our lances backwards (the wider part spearing the rings). He said I was to pick the best rider on our team for the ride off. My jousting partner was normally better at the games than I was, but that day he was having an off day and I wasn't. I hesitated. Was I really brave enough to pick myself? I usually choke in a clinch. But then I thought, "What do I have to lose anyway? It's only a game show." So I picked myself.

I knew the other rider was pretty good with the blunt end of the lance. I'd seen him practice before. My mare wasn't the best at galloping steadily at the rings, and I'd never tried with the back end of the lance. I went first and got a perfect score! Then the other fellow went and missed one. I had won!

My teammates went wild, galloping around the ring with me in between them. The crowd was yelling and cheering and going crazy. It was such a thrill. All afternoon everyone at the festival kept congratulating me and telling me what a great thing I had done. It felt like I had won the Olympics.

When I hear the song "One Moment in Time" I always recall that memory. For that one time, I was all that I hoped I could be. Never did that well after that. But I had my one moment, and so did my game little mare.

Knightrider, although this was a sad story in many ways, it was also a very exciting story to read. It must have been the best feeling you could ask for and it sounds like you really needed it at that time.
