eventful endurance ride(long)

So on friday afternoon we loaded the horses to go to the drayton valley endurance race. We got there around 5:30pm and there was basicly no more stalls left but we found 2 so we rushed over and got them. Reno was not a happy camper because I had to wake him from his nap. But once he got some beet pulp he was happy. So went to get all the paperwork done, and spent about 20 minutes there lol (I am a bit of a tool but thats okay).

So I cleaned up Reno and took him to the vet, did a great job got all A's. Then walked back but got distracted by a cute puppy running loose. So on we went, put reno away after putting his flysheet on. Started a fire and by the the rest of my family was there. Around 11:30pm the rest of the farm gang showed up (kinda pissed off that they were so late) got them all figured out. And told them that our ride starts at 7am (to beat the heat).

So stayed around the fire for a bit then went to bed around midnight. Woke up at 2 then 3 then 4 I just stayed up. Feed our horses and walked around camp for a bit. 5am rolls around and everyone starts to wake up. So around 6am we start to tack up and start warming up the horses.

Reno was not in a good mood because it was cold that night. But off we go. Went right into a hand gallop and he started to feel reaaallllyyyy good. Next came a bridge that we had to slow down on, we crossed it no problem but I noticed his head bobing a bit so we took it a bit slower and after a bit of this head bobing I got off and picked his hooves.

And then we were all better, then BAM a tree hits me so hard in the knee that it sent the saddle flying back and sideways, so I fell off and landed on a tree stump. So there I was laying on the ground thinking that Reno has run off kicking and bucking like crazy (has a very touchy flank) but the next thing I feel is a fuzzy lip and hear some nickering to my left. And there he was, my main man.

So after a bit of laying there trying to get my balance, I got up and hoped back on and finished the 20 mile loop. We crossed over 22 bridges, 2 car bridges, 3 water crossings, and countless hills with a busted up body. I couldn't put my feet in my stirrups because my knees woundn't bend, so I was doing this all without them. But once I got over that 20 miles I fell off Reno, handed him to my cousin and layed there.

One of the vets came over to check me out, but my step-mom beat him to it. She is a nurse so I was well taken care of. So I dropped out and went back to camp to get some ice gel and ice. So there I was sitting with ice vet wraped to my knee and there comes BearBait, well I bought a new saddle from her and went back to camp.

After a couple of hours of icing it and of course diner, everyone went into the river to cool down, so I went too to help my knee. Which worked VERY well. But then I steped on a starp rock. So I was sitting on the grass next to the river and noticed the big pool of blood on this rock, lift my foot up and noticed it was coming from me. I now have a nice hole in my foot.

So everyone went back to camp, played around with the fire. I was feeling no pain (good thing for painkillers) so I hoped on Reno without a saddle or shoes and walked around the park a bit. Next thing I know, some lady came up to me asking if I was the one that had the really bad fall, and I was like...maybe. And she asked why I was still here on a horse and not in the hospital. lol I told her I am alright and everything is good. So we walked on and another lady stops me, then another, then another. I think almost everyone in the park found out about my fall lol.

Next morning woke up, had some food, feed the horses. Wraped up there legs and went on home. I now have a huge pile of horse stuff to wash. But it was a good weekend none-the-less.This weekend was one to remember.

Oh jeez! I guess it's the endurance rider's creed to have weird luck like that. My friends ride endurance and CTR's and always come home with similar stories......I'm not sure I want to try another CTR.
I'm glad you're ok!

Glad to hear Reno's doing fine, but how are YOU today ?!

Along with some of the not-so-good stuff, it sure sounds like you made the best of it, and like all the people at the ride are very caring and supportive, which is really nice to hear!

Haha, that's how I am too. I'm bleeding but my horse is limping, so he comes first!

Thanks guys, I am doing alright. Have both my knees in braces (just the kind you buy from a store) but they are nice and black lol. As for the hole in my foot, is all healed up already. I found a huge brusie on my back this morning lol. I look worse then what I really am.

Those are the best weekends..the ones with bruises to show off to illustrate the tale.

I hope you heal in time for the next one.

Sounds like you had quite the ride!! I have always wanted to try endurance and it is something I might aim for next year. Will be sending you lots of PM's so I can get your advice on conditioning, etc. in the New Year. I need to do the rides without the rider injury though or hubby won't let me compete!!
Hope you are feeling better today.
