In May of this year, after 8 years without a horse, I bought Katie.
I've been boarding her since then (working weekends in exchange for free board) but tomorrow after I'm done cleaning stalls and feeding, I'll be riding Katie HOME! Yay!! Even though the barn is only 2 miles from home, there's nothing like having your horse right there with you. It's such a pain to have to get in the car and drive to the barn whenever you need a horsey fix.
We finished up our new pasture and barn (converted carport) this week and it's ready for move in. I hope she'll be happy in her new home. Here's the barn (run in) that measures 12x18 in the front for the horses and an 8x18 space in the back for hay, grain, saddles, etc. I'm buying stall mats for the front part too so that it doesn't get all muddy in there.

Only the cut area is our property and is fenced in.

AND! Because I don't want Katie to be lonely, I happened to run across an ad on craigslist for someone wanting to free lease a 22 y/o Appendix QH mare (option to buy after 6 months). The lady was very particular about who she wanted to take her mare and, after coming out to see our property, picked me. So she may be delivered tomorrow afternoon, too. I hope she'll be perfect as a companion for Katie, and a trail horse for my kids and/or husband (who are not horsey people).
It's going to be a busy day, because I have to go get hay too. And, of course, a trip to TSC to pick up a few more essentials.
I hope to continue working weekends at the barn, to pay forward for free board when and if it is needed (like for a few months in late winter/early spring to give the field a rest and the grass a good start growing. Hopefully, the barn owner will accept my proposal, which is I continue to work and for every month I work I'll get two weeks of free board for 2 horses. So if I work four months, that's two months free board. I plan to talk to her tonight.
I'll be sure to take pictures after everyone's all settled in!
