Unhappy It's Been A Year *Pic heavy*

It's hard to believe that Delilah has been gone for a year now. August 15 2007 was the day that she was laid to rest.

For those who don't know, Delilah was one of the few horses that I help took care of. She got Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) in the end of April 07. She got it bad. 104.5 fever with pipe stream diarrhea. She stopped eating and drinking soon after. The vet told us that this was huge, and the best thing to do was take her to the state university equine hospital.

She recovered from PHF, but end up foundering on her front feet. At first it was a few degrees rotation (2-3 degrees). She came back from the hospital a few weeks after, thinking that she was stable. When the farrier took off the padding that they placed on her feet two weeks after that. He noticed that her sole was bulging. He said that it indicated that she continued to rotate.

We took her to the local vets office to do X-rays, a couple of days after that. It confirmed that she continued to rotate. She rotated 6 degrees on her left and 7 degrees on her right. We tried everything we could to save her. It was a long battle to keep her comfortable. Around July, she couldn't stay up long, and laid down most of the time. Battling with her feet, I was also battling with pressure sores.

The coffin bone ended up piercing through her sole. We went back to the vets on August 14. They did another set of X-rays on her. The vet's and our farrier said that there is nothing they could do. She rotated a little more and the tissues in her feet were dying. The best thing to do was to humanely euthanized her.

This was taken a month or so after we got her in November of 04

This was what her front feet looked like around the end of July

This was taken a few days before she was euthanized. Looking back on these pictures, I came to realized that she was ready to go....

This is one of my favorite pictures.

I still find myself crying over her. I still keep thinking about her. Even though I didn't own her, she was like my own horse. Even the owner admitted a couple of times that she was more of my horse then hers. I loved that horse and I did everything with her. She was my best friend.

Aww I'm so sorry. What a tragic way to loose your horse. Those pictures are great though - thankfully we have technology to help us remember now.

May she rest in peace.

Ditto to Pony Express...
Think of those memories and remember that everything happens for a reason. She was a beautiful mare who must have loved you very much.
