Smile Max wins the first challenge

Jim has challenged me to train Appy Gilmore to be able to be a firing platform, so I can take the .22 out and be able to take a shot if we come across something.

Soooooooo, today the horses had to be moved to a big paddock while we moved cows around, so when I went to check everyone this evening, I thought I would test the water. I decided that there was plenty of room for the horses to bolt if they wanted to, and they have heard gunfire before, just not up close.

They all came up to the gate and I stood the other side, took careful aim down the track into a safe area, then watched the horses as I fired.

Fancy spun round and took off for the horizon, and kept going.

Appy Gilmore spun round, ran about 10 feet than came back doing the post beautiful passage with his tail up like an Arabian

Max was hanging over the gate, watching in the direction of the shot, going #mmmmmm not bad"

So I don't think Fancy wants to be a gun horse, Max should be easy, and I think I'll win the bet with Appy

Good luck with your challeng.
Sounds like Max will be the one to work with.
I knew I really like that boy.
Growing up Dad always keep one that he could shot off.
Sheriff department would always borrow them.
He decided to test my barrel mare one day, while I was on
her, without telling me
Well when the shot was fired she went one way, I went the other
She was one that the Sheriff department never wanted to borrow.

Well that was a pretty good first trial! Good luck with Appy Gilmore, but Max sounds like he is going to be one firm minded horse!

Yup, I think he'll be easy, and he's easy to like

I'm glad that no one wanted to try one of mine while I was riding, could of been interesting. If you've got any hints and tips and how to go through the training I'd be glad

Back when I used to do the mounted shooting, we would go to the dollar store and pick up some of those little kids cap guns to get the horses used to it...

We'd start out just shooting the cap guns off near them, then on them, then went to the real guns on the ground, and then closer, and so on....

Always good to know your horse won't freak out over gun shots, even if it's not "on" them.

We desensitize all of ours to guns

Way to go appy... your well on your way to being a great gun horse
