Riding in the rain -I feel twelve years old again!

I just had one of the BEST rides ever with Rosie. It had been threatening to rain all morning but I thought if I jump on her bareback when I get to the barn we could slip a ride in before the rain came. Well, that was not to be...

I quickly curry combed off the worst of the mud from yesterday's rain, picked her hooves, and grabbed her bridle to head out to the arena when the rain started. By the time I was flexing her on the ground (part of our 10 minute warm-up routine we do most days) it began to POUR. Her ears went back and she looked at me as if to say - "we are going back in, aren't we?" The sane people are in the barn with their horses under cover. Well, there wasn't any thunder or lightening so I reassured her that everything would be fine and that we were "having fun." I'm not sure she believed me but sweet mare that she is, she cooperated with her crazy owner

I lunged her in a couple of circles either direction (pouring rain) and then bridled her and led her to the mounting block (still raining hard) when she moved away as if to say "Are you nuts - can't you see it's raining?"

I held her head in my chest and told her it would be okay, then brought her around again - this time she stood still so I could mount. I hopped on her and we just meandered around in the rain. Rosie was absolutely wonderful. We stayed at a walk and just enjoyed being in the middle of the downpour - I was totally soaked by that time, and so was she. It rained about twenty minutes while we rode around, and then the sun broke out so I took her out into the big pasture and we had a GREAT ride - both of us stayed cool and eventually dried out. After a while it even got dry enough to have good footing so we trotted and loped a little bit and she did perfect - transitioned to each gait easily and stayed in it. I am so proud of Rosie and the trust we have built in each other!

I felt like a kid again - riding in the rain - what a great day! Just had to share with some folks who would understand

I am so very happy for you. The two of you have can come so far and you can tell by the trust that she gave you when you rode in the rain. Good for you.

Yup! I think I'll start every ride that way. The picture in my avatar is me as a kid with my mare Cindy - riding like Rosie and I rode today

How fun! That is so great. It is raining today, and we were planning on riding in the covered arena, but we might have to follow your lead and ride in the rain!
