Freeze branded the horses, With updated pics on pg. 2

We got the three horse's freeze branded today. They all did really well and the brands came out great. Here's Chevy going through the entire process,

Shaving,

Applying the alcohol,

Holding the brand on after cooling in the dry ice,

The result right after removing the iron,

This what it looking like after about 5 minutes. Starts to thaw and disappear,

And after about 20 minutes to half an hour it puffs up. This now on Libby,

After that it will scab up, peel and grow in white hairs over the next few months. I'm really happy with it and really looking forward to seeing it grow in. .

Here's Libby's right after the iron was taken off,

And Iggy's,

Yeah it was really neat to see the freeze branding. Our vet gave them each a mild seditive just to help with pain and keep them still. I also really like the fact that all our horses (expect our weanling) are now branded with our registered brand.

That is so neat! I always wanted to see it done!

If you don't mind me asking, what did it cost you to get them done? We have three boys now and wanted to get ours done (especially since two are grade and no other way to identify them)...

Our vet did a multi horse discount (more than one = multi horse) we branded 5 and it was $45 a horse plus sedation & farm call. It really wasn't that bad and I love the fact that our horses are now very easily traceable.

They also show up very nicely on Pali's and dunskins as our friends have two horses that they have branded previously and you can see them clearly.

Thank you for posting that. I have always been curious as to how the process was done. The end result looked really nice. I bet it hurts like heck, though. Then again, I have sat through hours of tattoos. How long does the iron stay on there? Who came up with the brand design? Is it the same one that is used for the cattle? Sorry if those questions sound silly to ya'll, I have never seen it done and I am not a cow person.

GLD- This way looks a lot less stinkier than the calf branding.

Plus $220 to register the brand and $124 for the branding iron . But now we can do as many as we want.

NICE brand!

We decided we wanted to freeze brand ours after watching Debi Metcalf do it at Equifest this year.

I'm not sure what I want ~my~ brand to be though.

The family that had theirs branded for the demo's was an equals sign in front of "No" sign on a $ symbol. They said it means "Horses equal no money." I laughed.

Oh yes, there is no smell with freeze branding at all as there is no burning of hair at all.

With the pain issue, I really don't think it hurts them I think it is just uncomfortable for a moment. There is only 5 seconds that the brand is on that the horse really even notices that it is even really there at all. I know that Iggy shifted a bit but nothing much and Chevy and Libby didn't move. Libby actually fell asleep in her grain and Chevy wanted kisses.

The vet left it on for 25 seconds. I came up with the design of the brand after GLD's came up with the name she wants for the ranch (Night Fire Ranch, hense, N and F). We want to use it for cattle as well but we haven't registered it for cattle just yet.

Once we register for the cattle brand we will get a hot iron brand as it is also a different size for cattle than for horses. So we will have two different irons with the same brand, one for the cattle and one for the horses.

If it was the same size, can you use the same iron for freeze and hot branding?

No for a freeze brand you need a cooper brand and for a hot brand we use an tubular electric brand as they are much easier and don't get hot points like an iron brand that goes in the fire to get hot.

That and our freeze brand iron is only 1 1/2 inch for each letter and on the electric brand letter are about 3 inchs long.

How neat! I like your brand. What a great way to identify your horse.

Would love to see updated pics when the hair grows in.

OK, here's a totally dumb newby question . . . why don't the do brands in less conspicuous places? (By "they" I just mean anyone in general. Not trying to pick on the original poster!)

Thoroughbred tatoos go into the mouth, which is is pretty inconspicuous yet everyone knows that's where to look.

I guess I'm just thinking something like inner thigh, or underbelly . . . hmm, as I write that I guess danger-to-brander might be one reason not to . . .
