Help!! my girl is a piro maniac.

Today i was out burning old hay that had been peed and pooped in, velvet comes over, puts her head down, smells the smoke, starts gruntin and groaning, pawing, and decides she wants to play in the fire. She starts to go down, i react fast, popped her on the butt with rake, she stops but won't move. Here i am fighting wih a 1,200 lb animal. Finally i had no choice but to stomp the fire out. Had to hose down the area good, I turn to walk away and she rolls, plum in the center of the soot. Anyone elses horse a piro?

And I bet she spooks at birds, mailboxes and her own shadow... but she wants to ROLL in a FIRE!

Glad you got it out. I've actually heard of another horse that did something similar and got burns all over his back, and lost alot of hair.

my only suggestion would be to either move her to a different pen or burn the stuff some where else. I don't know if any of my horses like fire since I don't burn anything near them.. Good luck! and I'm glad you got the fire out in time..

I bet if you ride her and smoke comes toward her she would freak. Our horses are always curious when we burn, but they have never tried rolling in it.

My horses like rolling in soot. We had a giant pile of it in the back of the pasture from the San Diego wildfires in 07, and both of the chestnut horses were grey. >.O

See I was always told that animals get stupid when it comes to fires and they will actually run into the fire.
When our neighbors cattle barn caught on fire even some of the ones they got out in time ran back into it.

I'm glad your horse wasn't burned!

Ours love rolling in the soot, must be the smell or something, but I haven't seen them take on the actual fire, weird!!

I can't help but wonder if she was trying to put it out herself? Like she knew fire was bad in her pasture and she wanted to put it out? I don't know, never heard of this. But that thought just popped into my mind when I read your post.

When I was 17 my parnets bought land and after 10 years of boarding my horses were brought home to live with me. I was one happy girl

Anyway I was out burning the "poop pile" from cleaning the barn out in the middle of a 3 arce field. Something distracted me (can't remember what now) and I went back into the barn.

I had a very loud white paint yearling. Her one brown spot on was on her side the rest of her was white. While I was gone for just a few minutes she layed down and rolled in the burning poop. I caught her and chased her away then had to clean her up. I was lucky her skin wasn't burnt but she was no longer white. She look like a burnt Marshmellow.

I have understood that animals go where they have been safe. In their minds the barn is a safe place. They do not understand the whole fire thing and just were going back to where they found refuge. Our horses have an aversion to fire. They were all at the place that burned down and really watch fire with a cautious uncertainty.

When I was a kid, we always burned our trash. I had a pinto horse that would play in the fire. He'd grab burning pieces of trash and shake them around. He never got burned, but he'd make a beeline for the fire when we'd start to burn our trash. Loved to play in it, never got burned. I was too young and dumb to think about how dangerous it was. I figured he'd know. I guess he did--he never got burned.
