my NON bouncy standardbred!

Well, I finally did it; mind you, it was on a lunge line but still... I did it! I trotted on my girl for the first time! As some of you may know I've only been riding my horses at a walk for the last year as I've had confidence/balance issues. After several lessons of w/t/c on lesson horses I decided to try my standardbred at the trot. I was expecting the bounciest trot I've ever ridden , which is why I've been putting it off, but she was really quite smooth. Standarbreds aren't bred to carry a rider, my hinny! Maybe she's the exception but she really was nice & smooth. I've been told by several people that she has beautiful confromation & to my untrained eye I believe she does as well, but that could just be a momma's pride. I'm so happy. I wasn't expecting her to be a very pleasing ride but she is!

Now I can't leave my other girl out. She actually let me ride her on the lunge line! This is big as she wouldn't budge last time I tried it. She lunges beautifully without a rider & I can ride her off the lunge but riding her on the lunge was beyond her... until now! I didn't trot her though as I've just broke her to ride & I want her to take it nice & slow for a while (she already bolted on me once).

Sorry guys...just had to brag a bit.

My grandfather swore that the Standardbred mare he had when my dad was a kid had the smoothest trot he's ever ridden!

I know of some Standardbreds that are smooth to ride, and others that aren't. I guess the best thing a person could do is have them nice and balanced, and going along collected, that always helps.

Congrats on your milestone; keep it up as you feel comfortable to do so!
