Save me!

We recently moved our yearlings out of their own area into the pasture with the adult horses.

Spud, a 13 year old gelding, thinks he runs the place.

Well, Spud detests King, our yearling gelding. My husband, K, was out in the middle of the pasture with King. The rest of the horses were off in a corner. After giving King some scratching and loving, he walked down to check the water trough. He's about 20 feet away and hears hooves pounding. He turns around and Spud is chasing King. King ran straight to my husband, stuck his head under K's arm and looked at him with begging in his eyes. "PLEASE save me from Spud!"

Kelly had a lead rope in his hand so when Spud got close enough, he hit him with it. King never moved his head and kept pace with Kelly walking. Spud tried once more and got it again with the lead rope. Then he decided to go back to the other horses. And King got a nice long cool drink of water.

I thought it was the neatest thing that King trusted that his human would protect him.

Poor little guy. I could understand being chased if he was acting up or throwing his weight around. That's cute that he retreated to your husband for help. But also a little dangerous. Spud could have kept going even though he had a lead rope. Good thing it stopped him or your husband may have had one horse under his arm and another on top of him.

But yes, that was a test of trust from King to your husband. Sounds like a lot of future there.

Don't worry about it, my horses do the same w/ each other, they are all jealous. Except I don't have a yearling.
