What a ride! Glad to be in one piece...stupid pony

So I decided to take Celista out for a nice leisurely bareback ride around the hay field after her lunge tonight. Well...leisurely it was not! I am very comfortable riding bareback at a walk but am very unbalanced riding bareback at a trot. Therefore, we mostly walk with occasional trotting. Well Celista decided that we'd both be more comfortable at a canter, & so, that's what she did! I panicked & then thought, "Hey, this isn't so bad. In fact, I'm way more balanced than I am at the trot." We come to a corner, I'm praying she slows down at least for the corner but my prayers went unanswered as she then decided to gallop. In the end, I'm alive, sore but alive. I am a little perturbed that she seems to know better than I do as to when I'm ready to move up a level. She did the same thing when I started her (& myself) over jumps. I could see it if she were a seasoned lesson horse but she's only been broke for a few years. It was kinda fun though!

Glad to hear you are all in one piece! Funny how sometimes our horses know us better than we know ourselves, it seems, eh? Cantering bareback IS a TON easier to sit to than a bouncy trot...although is scary as heck to do!! I know now that I'm older, I don't 'bounce' nearly as well if I fall off as I used to....LMAO

Way to go, Greygirls!! Some of my most fun/alarming memories are of cantering bareback on my very plump Belgian-hackney gelding. Kinda like riding a moving sofa.

well now that you know your not going to fall of are you gonna do it more often? that was probably her evil plan ... My friends and I go bareback riding all the time w/t/c & galloping. And it saves time not tacking up!

How about the time lost washing all those dirty jeans

Loved the story greygirls. I assume you stayed on top, correct? Did you grab a good handful of mane?

Definitely time for a new T-shirt. "I survived a bareback GALLOP!"

YAY YOU!!!! I agree...riding bareback at a canter...is way easier to balance than at a trot Great job! Ive been riding bareback also...and boy am I getting by balance down! You dont really know how bad your balance is until you try riding bareback If you keep at it...you will be able to hold on around those sharp turns Believe me...I know...Tilly has done it a time or two
Im glad your okay! Keep up the good work you little trooper you

Thanks guys! I'm glad to hear the trot is difficult for some of you as well. I'm not even comfortable trotting with her in a saddle; what with her choppy little pony stride & all.

MustangKatie,

I probably will do it again (but hopefully it will be my idea next time). It certainly beats trotting BB anyway . That, and once I got over the panic, I did have fun!

singing tree,

I did stay on & yes...I had lots of mane in my hands. I was glad it was her & not Southie as Celista has a long mane whereas Southie's mane is pulled. I did let go of her mane at one point though to get a hold of the reins better (in an attempt to slow her down a little).

My mom happened to look out & see us cantering across the field. When I told her of the happenings, she said "Why did you give her a big hug when you got back to the barn then!?" my reply...Because she took care of me. Even though she took matters into her own hands, she put up with me hanging off of her neck & mane, & eventually slowed down with verbal cues alone. That's good enough for me!

Better to laugh than cry, I always say! I totally agree with the saying, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Every experience, good or bad, is an opportunity to learn & grow. Wow, I'm apparently in a philosophical mood today.

Im really not balanced in a saddle let alone BB. I prolly would have been hanging from stars neck if that were me. Been working on it but not there yet. we are learning the w/t/c voice commands from ground first then from saddle. i did learn to post at the trot much easier on the backside
