AQHA World Champion Gelding killed - Update on 2nd one seriously hurt= P.2

http://dangeroustrailersaccidentstha...-accident.html

This is absolutly devistating. How horrible is this. It was said on my other forum the receiver hitch failed.

They pull with a huge motor coach and a 4H bumper pull (matching).

Keep them in your prayers, this sends goose bumps down my spine.

I thought about posting this when I heard the news, but I didn't know how many people would be interested. I have actually met the Kents and have talked to them on numerous occasions. It is so sad, they have such the perfect relationship. They retired and took thier passion on the road going from show to show. They had such a beautiful setup with a matching RV and trailer. I loved walking by their stalls, they have a nice big picture with them holding hands on thier horses. It's really sad that they lost thier horse.

The good news is it's the beginning of the new show season for them, so at least they can get a new horse and not lost out on the points for this year.

Excuse me? But that's what they do! Thier passion is showing! If you had a horse die, would you not get another because you are grieving? Let's say there was a huge trail ride you go to every year. 2 months before the trail ride goes on your horse falls ill or dies, would you not get another horse? Maybe not. But I know there are plenty of people that have bought another horse after they had one pass away.

ETA: All I meant was that it would be even more horrible if this had happened right before the world show! A whole year worth of money and time lost.... I didn't say they needed to go get another horse right away! I simply meant at least they don't have to take a whole year off!!!

If you have a problem with me, send me a PM!

I did, I think we got it settled.

Can we get back to the "REAL" thread now and maybe learn from this ?

How many really check their hitches ??

So sad. What bothers me most is that the horror these horses went thru the last seconds of their traumatic ending to their lives. I hope the other horse is doing well. Seems like he is in a nice place receiving great care.

I saw no mention of safety chains or the the breakaway thing for the trailer brakes. Were they not being used or did they fail also?

It is so scary! Jon checks his hitch EVERY time we get back in the truck. If we leave it for 10 seconds he does another walk around. And always checks the hitch and ball.

What a tragedy for those poor people and horses.

My heart goes out to them. Just can not imagine how devastated they must feel. Please don't be critical. Accidents do happen. Personally I would probably never be able to haul a trailer again after this. Let's all take a lesson from this and check, check and double check all our equipment.

How sad this is. It is often been my fear and luckily I have never had to see or go thru it.

I have never met them personally, but I have read a few articles about them. Just from the impression the articles give about what kind of people they are, it wouldn't suprise me if they did take the next year off from showing. It's bad enough to have lost one, but to have the other hanging on and not knowing what will happen to her is just as worse, and seeing her is a constant daily reminder of what happened to Version too. If I remember correctly they may have some younger horses that they have also raised at home that could fill the shoes of these two, but I'm sure it will take time to get there. Obviously these people have worked hard to take home bred and raised horses to the top of their abilities - so I doubt to them it would be just about buying another one to chase points.

That is horrifying! Those poor people, those poor horses. Too sad, just way too sad.

Trailering is my worst fear, and we only go about 5-10 miles each way, but I am always scared something will happen and we will have a wreck and the horses will get hurt. Good reminder to always check, always...it's not a guarantee, but it helps to be sure nothing is wrong before you start out.

Oh, my that is so tragic, I feel so bad for the owners, and their loss, I hate to talk about my story, but I had this very same thing happen in Tx, I was 14 and my mom was pulling my gelding, and the trailer hitch, broke in half.. see, its not how much money people have or the nicer trailers, Im sure they had a beautiful set up....horrible horrible accident, but one thing came out of my accident, the hitch we were using had a faulty , crack in under side, we had just bought it brand new day before....

Part of agreement was that I could not mention brand to anyone, but they did however settle.....but still I lost my Kingsberry Kerezman.....

Prayers and speedy recovery for the horse...very sad...

That's just awful!

Would there have been any signs on the hitch itself that it may fail? Would they have seen any cracks or is this something that would not have been foreseen?

I am not questioning the Kents at all, just trying to learn of what else to look for prior to pulling my trailer. After I hook up, I always drive about a mile (from the house to the highway) and stop before getting on the highway to make sure everything is still hooked up correctly/tightly and that I remembered to lock the back gate (one of my biggest fears for some reason).

Any words of advice from those who are seasoned haulers of what to look for prior to hauling????

Oh that is so tragic! My heart and prayers really go out to those poor people, poor Version! I just purchased my first trailer and I am looking for a good tow truck. Now I'm rethinking the whole thing! how sad I really hope their mare pulls through.

You need to periodically check your welds in your hitch on your truck as well as your trailer. I look my goosneck over every once in awhile, probably not as often as I should. If you suspect a weld is faulty looking or has a possible crack in it, take it to a good welding shop and have them double check it or possibly re-weld it to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the info TPNA - so it is the welds we should be looking at. I knew I should have kept my ex-boyfriend around (he is a welder)!

Or if you ever get in ANY kind of rear end collision and have a body shop fix your vehicle. Remember what happend to me in April? Probably not, but I hauled horses for 5 years with that truck and hitch. Only problem I had was something shorting out the lights and blowing fuses. Bayrider, get a qualified person to install the tow package and check your frame for stability.

Is there a newspaper article on this or is it just on this blog?

This is so horrible! I cant even imagine how those people must feel. Im so glad they didnt lose both horses. But, man what a loss on their price gelding. RIP! beautiful boy!
Im confused on why the safty chains were never mentioned? Do hitches break at the welds often? Is that what actually happened...I dont get how a hitch can just snap in half? Unless it was at the welds...but beings they had such a nice ride/set up, you would think they would have a newer hitch....which is why im questioning how a hitch breaks in half?
Im not putting blame on them at all! Im just curious on where the hitch broke. Is anyone else?
