Well. The owner was found. I wont bother trying to share every dumb, stupid or ignorant thing that was said today.
The owner is a woman who lives a few miles away but the property the horses were put on is about 1/4 mile from my house and even less than that from where I board.
Apparently, the fence around this acreage was fixed in 2001, and the woman felt as though it was not necessary to check the fenceline again before she had these horses delivered there on Sunday.
There is no water or water troughs or even buckets on the property. Its a good chunk of acreage, but it is entirely weeds and dead grass. There is no hay/feed or grazing on the property.
I guess she had them dropped off on Sunday and has not been back to check on them since. The entire back fenceline is down, with old dead trees across it. This acreage is along the old highway that I travel at least twice a day and I always look at this area, I never saw these horses there so they probably went straight through the back and have been wandering the woods since Sunday evening.
The owner asked the property owner to keep the horses at least another night, because she apparently lost her puppy too and that is more important. She says she is not worried about the horses because she knows they are at someone's house, even though she doesnt know any of us. She was less than two city blocks away and could not be bothered by coming to see her horses.
She has no trailer and had not yet thought of how she was going to take her horses home.

Get THIS... that paint mare... the one who looks older.. I guess she is only about 7 and is supposedly a well trained show horse... she says she just got her on Sunday.
The little black mare is 11.

*the owner of the two horses*

WOW...some people...that mare is only 7!!! My goodness
So, are you allowing the owner to come and get them? Or are you going to get authorities involved?

Why does this super idiot have horses?
Are the authorities going to return them willy nilly or is someone going to make sure the lady has adequate food, shelter, water, fencing. Doesn't take a brain surgeon to pound in a few T posts and make a fence for the animals, although in this case, since the owner was so dumb, maybe it was in the animal's best interest to be able to roam free.

Get authorities involved. No water access is along the line of animal abuse.

She was told this evening that we are keeping the horses until there is feed AND water on the property. She was also advised that they would be checked on.

Im worried, this evening both mares have a snotty nose. I doubt either have had shots. good news is they are pretty much quarantined, and we have made sure to wash after touching them.

. . . .. and you should be charging her board for feed, medicine or anything else that you provide for the horses. She should be held accountable for their condition and get the authorities involved -- then you have a record of the condition they were found in and the fact that they were running loose endangering themselves and motorists.
Good luck dealing with the owner - she sounds like she shouldn't be owning any animals!!

As I read this I was praying you WOULDN'T find the owner. I can't imagine anything good for those poor horses future if they are returned to her. Good luck.

So did this woman just buy these horses and have them delivered? (it took a while for them to get in this condition), in which case they came from one lousy situation to another. Or has she owned them for a while, allowed them to get this way and just recently moved them?
Either way, until she can prove she has the essentials for their care they can't go back. Hopefully your property owner can step in and help. Yes, itemize every single expense and keep taking pictures to document their condition. How can she prove that they are hers ?(I know you risk horse stealing here) but the authorities need to be involved to prove that they are hers and when it is acceptable for them to return.

Considering their condition, I was hoping the owner wouldn't be found too.

I have to agree with all of this. Keep us posted on any new developments, and good luck.

Thats so sad for those horses. What I thought in the beginning, another person with horses, a crappy fence and not caring for them properly.

I hope they don't get sick on you, there are a lot of horses out there without their routine care, worming and shots and feet. sure would not let them have contact with horses at your place.

Good you have a animal control to keep on her about care and about the "escape a bad fence."

so many animal owners that can't take proper care of a dog or cat.

Even worse for horses, they just throw them in a pasture and thats it. Don't even check fences or give any care. why do people think they can get away with that kind of mistreatment of any animal?

I've dealt with several situations like this over the years, and have sworn that I'll never try to help again. As far as local law enforcement in Florida (not just our county, but out neighboring counties) is concerned, if there is grass growing, or hay being put out, and there is a source of water, then the horses are fine!

The one exception was a family that had fallen on hard times, and just had too many horses. That county took the horses, and re-homed them.

Don't know what the law is like where you are, but here, strayed or abandoned livestock is kept by the sherriff's office at a boarding facility, which feeds and cares for them, and if no one claims them, or if the owner does not pay the board bill and any fines, the animals are sold at public auction.

Several nice horses were sold like that at an auction just north of us last year.

Hope this story has a happy ending.

i would really try and talk the AC into looking into the matter, did they even say anything about the horse??

I really don't want them to go back to the old owner, she can't be botherd to even come take alook at them, what kind of horse owner are you if you can't even come to see your horses that have been missing a few days!!! This makes me so mad.

Bless you for helping them though.

Around here that would woman would be asked to produce health papers and coggins, if she did not posses them then she and especially person that transported them would be facing thirty days of quarantine plus fines etc. So she should be held/and or the person that brought them for their condition.
