My farrier is an idiot!

Hi, I have had my horse for over 2 years and he has had no hoof problems until this new farrier. He is losing shoes and now has glue shoes on which I don't believe he needs. My farrier has been putting the nail too close to the beginning of the hoof that it just breaks off. I know it can't go too far back either but still my poor horse has these glue on shoes which are positioned to where he can form navicular which I know won't happen over one time of having glue on shoes on, but still. And my horse can't go barefoot because he is tender without shoes on. Then my farrier said to me, I should be careful now that my horse has glue on shoes, he will be fresh under saddle. I mean, that was just the oddest thing to say. I mean I know part of the reason my horse is losing shoes is because he steps on himself but I put bell boots on and he gets them off. Smart horse. But this is the farrier's fault and he is messing up. I'm just so stressed and I know I have to find a new farrier but I hope until my horse is due again he will be alright with these glue ons. Does anybody in maryland know of any good farriers that can fix the problem. I'm sorry about the rambling, I'm just stressed over everything.

Have you posted in your regional forum as well. What a pain....it sounds like he needs regular shoes with clips and beveled heel edges.

What part of Maryland do you live in. and how many horses do you get shod/trimmed at once? If you are reasonably close to Northern Virginia/Manassas area, I could give you a recomendation for a new farrier.

She's panicing.

Kristin dear, Mr Cash will be fine but you do need someone new. Take a deep breath and relax.

To clarify some of this. Kristins horse Cash has continuously lost shoes. To look at the nails, they are put in too low, just above the bottom of the hoof so when he over reaches and steps on himself hard enough, the shoe comes off yanking hunks of the hoof off with it. If the nails were put in higher, with more nails (I want to say his belief is a horse only needs two nails on each side, I'd have to look but I know he puts very few in) I think the shoes would stay on better. Heck, I'm not even convinced he needs shoes. His hoof angles after the farrier put these glue on shoes looks way off and he looked so upright it isn't funny. This guy is one of those all horses need shoes kind of guy. He also told Krisitin that a pony she had just purchased needed to be done and needed shoes. She was just trimmed less than two weeks ago. I'm sure he meant he wanted more money. I've owned that pony for a year without ever needing shoes for trails or while she carried her foal. The guy is money hungry and does what's best for his wallet, not the horse. I have never heard of a horse getting "hot" because of glue on shoes and also never heard of glue on shoes for a horse that pulls shoes.

Kristin, your horse is fine. You and I both know that and "that guy" was wrong to tell you he'd be hot. He will be fine to ride and if you're really that nervous, lunge him first or wait until I get there monday.

I am sorry you are going through a tough time of it..
Some farriers just like some people in every profession are greedy and money hungry...
But fortuanetly for us there are the ones whom there first and foremost thought and concern is for the horse.. like my farrier..
i am moving to KY and we are strongly contemplating paying to have my farrier come out ever 6-8 wks to our new home..unless someone can recommend a great awesome super farrier in the area..
but i hope it gets better for you..
goodl uck on your search though for a new farrier btw...

Oh my, only 2 nails in each side. If I did that to my horse he'd have them pulled off before the farrier made it out of the driveway.

We use 4 nails on the outside and 3 on the inside on both front and rears.

I know looking for a new farrier is a pain but I'd be doing just that... ask you friends and your vet. You might also post in the regional forum as suggested by seerfarm to see if anyone has someone they really like.

Then when you find one you like take care of them. Cold drinks and a well trained horse go a long way to keeping someone you like. Tips help too...

Good luck

Hi, Gid's Mom. I'm new and don't know how to do the PM thing, but I do know a really good farrier here in the Louisville area. If you're interested, I can give you his name. He's great with my horse and since he's been coming to our boarding barn to do Beamer, most of the other folks there have started using him, too., I have a TWH that was "clicking" and he's spent a lot of time working with him to get it fixed. I think he charges a reasonable price, too.

He is

He's also tied a horse that wasn't behaving to his metal stand. Horse blew up, took off, jumped a fence and badly injured itself becuase the stand was dragging behind.

He does a previous boarders horse and walked into my barn before anyone was there to check out my horses. He had never met me and boy was I shocked to find him there. After rambling on about my horses feet and trying to convince me to hire him on with all of his you must do's, I declined but took his card for the future. He recognized my pony and proceeded to tell Kristin that I could not afford him. Poor Kristin and Cash, we'll find someone. Good farriers are tough to find these days.

You are right to start finding a new farrier, If I am not mistaken isn't one of the best schools in the country in MD.
Hubby lived there growing up and did mention that a school was there that he knew about.
Try to find it. (could have closed up by now but worth a try) if still available maybe that can recomend some one.

Hey Beamersmom -- my TWH "clicks" as well when he walks, some of the time, but not always, and not usually under saddle. I "think" what he is doing is hitting the bottom of his front feet with the tips of his back toes (if that makes sense??) What was yours doing and how is the farrier trying to fix this issue??
Sorry to hijack the post princesskristin . . . . . .

I am not Beamersmom, but you could have your farrier square his rear toes a bit more. Talk with him, your farrier and let him know that he is "overreaching".
