Today was Farrier Day, found a keeper!!

After a long search I eventually found a farrier who

a) Answered his phone
b) Was taking on new clients
c) Was prepared to travel to the middle of nowhere
d) Wasn't at all phased by my dire descriptions of Appy Gilmore's feet and possible issues with handling.

So today he was due to visit and

WOW is all I can say

From the fact that this guy turns up like nearly 2 hours early, which was actually a pain as we were trying to load bulls, but I'll know next time. The theory is if he starts early, and things go wrong, as they so often do with horses, he ends up being on time rather than late.

My herd were all HORRIBLE, I knew that Mr Gilmore would be bad, so I'm actually really pleased that he managed to do the backs 100%, and about 75% of the job on the fronts. He showed me what is left to do on the fronts, so I can work at that until he comes again.

Fancy was up next, she just freaked when I tried to hold her, and even if she heard me speaking, so I went and loaded bulls with Jim, and son John held her. Reports were although she was good with her feet, she was jumping and spooking at everything else. ( I have some serious bonding and bridge building to do with this mare)

Then Max, who was a little sh*t, pretended that he couldn't stand on 3 legs without falling over, so we just basically cleaned his feet. Shane showed me how to work with him using a lariat to let him teach himself to stand.

Throughout all of this he never shouted, never got cross, never threatened to hit anyone, just calmly held on and did as good a job as he could. Charged $30 a horse + $20 for gas, for me this one is a keeper

Great news, I'm happy for you! I figured Appy's feet could be saved, and am glad to hear the update!

But, if your horses were so 'bad', are you sure he'll come back? Just kidding !

Looking at this again I have to say though that things aren't quite as bad as it maybe sounds.

When I chatted to him about Appy Gilmore I was offering to have a joint farrier/vet visit, as I thought he would be impossible. It was Shane who said that he was prepared to give it a go and see how it went. I was actually really pleased that we got as much done as we did, that was a definite victory.

I had also warned him that I wasn't sure that Max was ready to be done, so he was prepared for him as well.

Fancy was the only one who really surprised me, she was just so spooky.

Didn't want anyone to think that I expect a farrier to deal with problem children, unless they know what the issues are

You can certainly guarantee that both kids and horses will make you stand there blushing at times But I'm so glad that we've found someone who is so quiet and patient

Don't mind at all, as long as his list doesn't fill up with people Check him out here

I love the name Deb is a lovely person, we had a great chat when I booked the visit. Shane is the strong silent type, did a nice job, he hung in there and did a good job on Appy Gilmore

It feels so good, but I;m a little disappointed, he's not what you might call eye candy, but then only special girls get that lucky

Isn't it awesome when you find the right farrier? It's almost as good as finding the right soul mate

I found my farrier from an ad he placed in the newspaper. Just had a terrible experience with a guy who quicked my horse and didn't know how to fix one of the donks. And then, along came Jay.....

My whole family loves him and he's become a dear friend to all of us. He never yells or muscles a horse around and he never looses his temper. (Although he's got beautiful blue eyes that turn almost black when he's mad...I tease him about it all the time)
