Question HELP! Reoccuring abcess...what to do now??

I have a 13 year old Hot Chocolate Chip mare that has a deep reoccuring abcess, she has been lame for about 3 weeks, i have busted her abcess 3 times, farrier saw it after the 1st bust and said it looked good and that it had drained but since then it has abcessed 2 more times, no puss, just bloody fluid, and a pretty good little bleed. i bust it and soak in epsom salt and water, flush with iodine and pack with icthamol. I just bought a davis soaker boot to hold the medicine in longer and keep it clean.
She is my lesson horse and i need her for lessons....does anyone have any ideas to get this cleared up?!

I havd had 2 other horses come up with abcesses, whats funny is all three horses have them in the same hoof and in about the same spot? Weird??? The other 2 are doing ok but mare abouve just cant shake it.....i dunno what else to do!

HELP!
Thanks
Amanda

Concern would be how deep that the abcess actually is.....convention busting and soaking may not be getting deep enough. Might want to consult with your Vet, and make sure that the abcess isn't possible up higher and effecting the bones in her hoof.

Red face

Thanks! Im going to check her today since she has been in that boot for about a day now packed with icthamol. If its not better in another day or so i will definately call the vet.
What about turpentine? I hear thats good to toughen their soles and have seen it used for abcesses? Any pros and cons to that?

Applying to a healthy hoof afterwards to help strenghten an aid in future health yes....I wouldn't apply venice turpentine until you are sure that all the abcesses are clear and healed. IMO

I think I would call the vet. Also, with ichthemol[sp?] it will really soften the foot, and if you turn her out on hard ground can cause bruising.
So I would keep her wrapped or booted when turned out - at least for a while, even if she seems ok.
Good luck, these things can be a real pain!

I was thinking the same thing as seerfarm. It really depends on how deep that thing is.

Since other horseys got 'em I'd wonder if they're connected and contact the vet for suggestions.

Good Luck
