Abcess? UPDATE!

Our mare Dream has been lame for 9 days, she is leased out to a family that tries but are making me question if I should get her out of there.

She is swollen up her leg to her hock, the vet has been out 3 times, ex-rays show nothing, she is buting her has her in a small paddock, nothing is helping. We went to see her and Nicole said it looks like it could be an abcess. Because the hoof looks like it wants to split by the band.

Can they cause swelling up the leg? I have never had to deal with an abcess before.

She has been soaking it since Nicole mentioned an abcess and the farrier was supposed to come yesterday.

Well my friends TB had one and her leg swelled up... All you can do is clean it and wrap it and it'll come out on its own..

My farrier once told me that an abcess COULD make the leg swell...., But, just a thought, she hasn't gotten into any chiggers, or stung by anything, has she?? Just a thought..., RB

Well it was an abcess but it didn't come out the hoof it was in her hock, she now has 2 huge holes where it drained, the poor girl. She is on 2 different antibiotics, plus packing the holes with an iodine/sugar mixture. She is putting weight on it and is back to eating.

She is so patient, she walks right up to her leaser to get her treatments and her shots. I don't know how long that will last. We are going to visit again on Sunday.

Could it have been a snake bite? Sounds like the leaser is doing the best they can. At least they called the vet and let you know about it! Some people wouldn't do either!
