New Farrier *Now With New Pictures*Pg 5

O.k. So.....here are Blondie's two front feet.

She def has thrush....I am most concerned with the cracks in her "heel".

The crevices beside her frogs go deep!

Waiting for farrier to call back.

These pictures were taken halfway through cleaning...so they are not the best.

Was holding out on the Koppertox as I heard it was harsh.

But I can get it from co-op if I need to.

Am currently using betadine.....and a good clean twice daily.

Her feet look wet because I squirted water on them.

This one shows crack...

Sugardine. Iodine and Sugar, make a paste and slap it on everyday at least once. Wipes out thrush.

And what is up with that shoe job, why is her shoe on her foot crooked?
Id be looking for a new farrier ASAP if my horses were shod that way!

Same type of cracks my mare has-- but she has had no frog at all. I was told to use Lysol-diluted and soak her feet then use an antibaterial in the crack-ours is antibacterial with tea tree oil. I put it in a syringe and actually fill up the crack

No Thats not the picture- every single picture it is crooked- except for the second shot, which I believe is a different foot. Also the shoe does not extend far enough towards her heel. You should be able to draw a straight line from her heel bulb to the end of the shoe when her foot is resting on the ground. I am willing to bet these fall an inch and a half or more short.

Yes....shoe is on crooked....but it is the only one.

I have had problems with my farrier.

Not too many choices around here though.

O.k. I knew the shoe was crooked/is...but could you explain a little better what you are talking about?

All I can do is watch him better when he shoes her again.

i did not own her when he shod her that time.

I am a little slow.

OKay- well I would keep her barefoot before I had shoes on like that! IMO- pull them, thats asking for more trouble than being barefoot!

Pulling a shoe is not that hard, first file off the nails on the outside of the hoof and then pull the shoe(a pair of hoof nippers works to pull the shoe.

Ok, the picture doesn't make it look worse. It's bad out of line, and with the keg shoes that's even worse than if she were flat shod. You can pull that shoe yourself but if you do, be sure you pull both of them. You never want a horse to be bare on oneside and shod on the other, however it doesn't hurt to have both fronts or both backs off with the other two on. I use one of the most expensive farriers in my area because I have found out that his shoes stay on longer and my horses have much less foot issues with him doing their footwork, so in the long run I end up saving money.

As for pulling that shoe, you can get nail pullers at TSC or about any feed store and it's not that hard just pull one nail at a time till the shoe falls off.

The only good thing I can say...is that I have not been riding her like that. We have only lightly rode...maybe 3 times.

Boy...I feel really bad now.

First the thrush that I didn't even think she had...now this.

I'll just go get the nail clippers...and pull them all off. She is only in the pasture.

see how her shoes have a little block at the back like a high heeled shoe? That block makes those keg shoes, I've only ever seen them on gaited horses and by the shape of her foot and the fact that she has keg shoes I assume she's gaited. So what kind of horse is she? Also, how far from GA are you? My farrier might come to you, like I said he's not cheap but he is da*n good.

As for the shoe being crooked, I wouldn't be surprised if that didn't have a lot to do her feet problems. See how it pushes her frog even with no weight on the foot, imagine what it does when she puts weight on it and the frog spreads out. Which brings up another issue with your farrier, this foot looks like the outside is longer than the inside and that the frog on the inside would be on the ground when she steps on that foot. I believe if I were you I would look for another farrier before I had her shod. (just so you don't think I'm picking on you, I did see your post that she was shod before you got her and from the looks of those shoes it hasn't been that long ago so you should have some time before you need her reshod)

I hope some of this helps.

Ok, I remember her now. Talledega, well I'll tell you what you should come ride with us sometime and I'll introduce you to my farrier and you can see how he does. One good trail ride in the north GA mountains ever two months would be just the break you guys need anyway.
