Wider Heels(PICS added)

I took Sasy to the vet, for her coggins, on Saturday. And I asked my vet about Sassy's chances of having navicular(or developing it). And she told me to keep her shod, and to have my farrier widen her heels a little.

She said I should be able to put a dime on the outside of the hoof and have it rest on the shoe.

My farrier is coming out this week to re-shoe her so I wanted to get your opinions on this before I talked to him about it.

does it sould ok, should I be worried about anything if we widen her shoe a little?

DoBe, sounds good if he can expand her heels outward some. It will help reduce some of the uprightedness of the sidewalls and quarters giving her a broader better angle.

Defenitly widen the heel it can cause pressure sores if the heel are to contracted on the shoe and not covering her heel right. imagine you walking on a shoe who's sole was to small and your heel hung over all the time eventually you would get bruises on you feet and be very sore!!!

No, not really if done properly and slowly. The general idea is to allow her heels to grow and spread out to the widen heel of the shoe. PM Range and I am sure that her and hubby could really give you the complete low down, on what to expect.

I might just have to do that. I'm not good at visualizing so I am seeing her with dinner plates for hooves. Which I know is supposed to be good for them, but .

Leadmare- I don't know alot about navicular, and Sassy has pretty upright pasterns(I associate that with navicular). So I asked my vet if she is at risk for navicular.

She told me that she doesn't look bad, but that I need to have my farrier widen her heels a little. I wasn't asking for a diagnoisis or anything, I just wanted to learn about it early. Sassy is 6, I just don't want to talk about this stuff too late. You know what I mean

So I was asking some questions.

"I see," said the blind woman Just because a horse is a bit upright is not a sentence for navicular.

So, what she's wanting is for you to have a wider shoe, not wider foot? Putting a wider web shoe, or fit the foot fuller offering more support to the heels is what I'm hearing there, right?

She must be feeling the foot is being shod too close/tight/short.

As always, got pics?

That's how we always shod my gelding Murhpy. We'd give him a good 1/4" of heel overhang on the shoe because by the time 5-6 weeks would roll around he'd be hanging over his shoes otherwise and then he'd get corns and other such wonderful things.

We weren't trying to correct anything with his hooves though, just keep him happy till reset time came around.

We do the same thing with Sam as well and he is a typical "navicular" type horse with very tight upright heels. He's also pidgeon toed and giving him the extra shoe to grow into keeps him up on the shoe a little longer before he needs a reset.

Yes Leadmare- I think that's what I'm trying to say. Her hooves grow over the shoe by the time she is supposed to be shod again. A wider shoe will help her to not grow over so bad.

I will take pics tomorrow morning

Gotcha!

When shod or reset @ 6-8 weeks, a wider webbed shoe or fitting her fuller is not going to encourage pancakes/dinner plates It will better the chances of not getting bruises, corns, or heel pain though.

Proper trimming and shoeing, turn-out and exercise, feeding and not letting her get fat, fat are going to be the best prevention of Navicular.

(Still like to see those pics)

wow she has a TON of heel on her. If all that heel was removed than she would acually need so toe removed!!! The shoes are way to small!!!

I don't know if it makes any difference, but this is about 6 weeks since she was last done.

But I have always thought her hooves look long not too long after she is done. But I blamed it on a fast growing hoof. Could this be the problem?

No hoof grows that fast. Is that right after she was shod or has it been six weeks and that is what she looks like right before she gets trimmed?

The pics are angled a bit too much to tell a whole lot, but she does have too much foot. Even for six weeks growth.

You have a whole side shot of her handy?
