Blahh....Thrush.

Well...on top of everything else...I think Sandy....now named Blondie has thrush.

I kept smelling something bad all day yesterday.....hitched her up to feed her today.....I have to separate them when feeding....and went to pick up her front feet to clean them out.

Well....found out where the smell was coming from.

Sheew....

White powdery stuff with black underneath.

All over the hoof and down beside the frog.

Since I have no clue what to put on it...I am going to search through the topics and find out.

Don't worry...I will not ask as the topic has been discussed in depth already.

Will be at tractor supply in the morning.

My only problem will be her back feet.

I just wanted to share.

You know if the smell is that bad, you can always soak each foot in a bucket o' bleach and water for about 10 min.

Cheap, easy, and it kills everything on the foot.

Just make sure you don't bleach her hair coat near the coronet band!

Thrush Buster and Koppertox are your best thrush remedies ( IMO). Koppertox is my favorite one. I know that TSC does NOT carry Thrush Buster. They do carry Koppertox. If you get the Koppertox, also get an applicator can and pour it in there as it is easier to manage and apply that way. If your horses feet are as bad as you say, I would apply it at least 2x day for a few days then at least 2x week for maintience. Just paint the whole bottom of their feet, frog and all. Just keep it out of the coronot band area.

Bleach is way too harsh on horses feet - you will see that people use that when you research the threads on thrush.

I have only had her less than a week...so I have no clue what she was standing in before I got her.

So just enough bleach in the bucket to get the bottom of the hoof????

I didn't smell it till yesterday. But like I said...the girl just dropped her off on Tuesday...I never got to see her living conditions.

Thank you for the tip!

Do I need to do Sugar's for preventitive?

Yes. Do both horses feet. Its preventative. I use Koppertox at least 2x week in the summer time (we get alot of rain) and 1x week in our dry months. I never have thrush issues.

Umm Kopertox is rather harsh itself.
I do not do prophylactic care for me horses regarding Thrush[aside from TRYING to keep them dry and clean at night when they are stalled]
I use topical treatment of Oxytetracycline when we have thrush in one of ours.
I try to avoid the caustic preparations.

Bleach and water is the best, Try not to put too much stuff on the hoof, they might dry and crack. just a preventitive everyonce in a while to keep the fungus at bay.

Try Pete's Goo -- it's the ONLY thing that worked on my mare's thrush (I tried them all). She had it in her heel bulbs and grooves. Pete's Goo is a mixture of Neosporin and athl. foot cream. It really, really works, you can get the ingredients cheap at Walmart (or similar) and it won't hurt the healthy hoof tissue (like bleach and some other treatments can).
