Injury Question (at the bottom)

First off I know everyone loves pictures so I will do my best to try to upload them once I get them to my computre......

My 2 year old colt came in from the field a couple of weeks ago with a 2 inch chunk of his hoof wall missing. It's on the outer heel of his left front foot. I had the vet out and she cleaned it very well and snipped the rest of the hoof off that was dangling by less then a centimeter.....

With that piece out of the way.... we found out that his inner laminae was exposed. So fast forward three weeks ..... (after 1 week stall rest)

He has front shoes on to protect him from stepping on the ground with the laminae... he also has a peice of pad to give extra protection..... It gets cleaned 1 to 2X daily with betadine scrub. He is no longer sensitive to the touch and it seems to have hardened. He's been absolutely perfect for all this scrubbing and everything with his hoof...

The vet looked at it early last week and said it was looking really good (better then she thought it would).. YAY!! He is 100% sound and normal except he thinks his feet are really heavy with the horse shoes!! haha So this is my questions....

Has anyone ever delt with this injury before? If you have how long should I expect for the hoof wall to take to grow back... (no rush since he's only 2)... also the vet said there shouldn't be any permenant damage to the laminae... has this been found to be true?

They say on the avg it takes 8-10 months for a hoof to completely grow out. Consider a hoof supplement to help with the new growth.

my friends paint did this last winter.im thinking it took around 6 to 8months to heal up.hoof would even crack open and bleed some as it healed.bute was given on occasion as some days were ouchier than others.she also used horseshoers secret.and a paint on grower/moisterizer like rainmaker.hard to believe but she entered 4h and is showing in fair this year.she kicked the lean to and put her hoof straight throu the metal siding.sliced about 1/4 of her hoof clean off!was back hoof.looked horrible and she could barely walk.so id say yep its true.at least with pepper it is.good luck and hope he turns out ok

Many years ago I had the priveledge of working with the late Burney Chapman, a farrier out of TX. He was the one who created the heart bar shoe and the gluestrider shoe. We had a very valuable mare founder after a difficult foaling so Burney flew in to help. The mare needed her hooves resectioned and it was my job to get her through the recovery. Burney had a remedy that he liked to use that consisted of 8 parts sugar to one part betadine. I had to pack the cut away area with this and then bandage the hooves. The mare recovered as well as could be expected and led a pretty normal life. I swear by this remedy and wouldn't hesitate to use it again on a damage hoof. I offer this info for anyone who has a catostrophic foot injury to deal with in the future.
