Where does your farrier like to do his work?

Where does you farrier like to stand when he trims your horse? Concrete, grass, dirt, in the barn or outside, does he like the horse in crossties or does he like you to hold the horse?

For you farriers, what is your ideal set up for trimming or shoeing a horse?

Blaine trims my horses in the front yard in the grass. If I am home, I hold them for him. If he's home and I am not, he wraps a lead around the fence, and they stand by themselves. I do know his ideal trimming area would be outside (for better visibility), on concrete and in cross ties. It's funny this subject came up because Blaine and I talked about this Saturday while he was trimming the horses. We are looking into building a concrete slab with cross ties and rails. He said a lot of it depends on the horse. When he first started shoeing Sampson, I had to hold him so he didn't freak out. Now Blaine can trim him without me being there.

Our farrier does the trims in the barn isle on concrete. If the horse behaves, he likes them if cross ties. If the horse has any issues, he wants the owner to hold them. By the way, he is a really good farrier.

My farrier has always has done my horses on concrete. (my aisle way of the barn.) To me, the only way to accuratly do a horse is on a solid surface so he has full visual of the feet. I wouldn't ever have horses done on something other than a solid surface w/out an distractions.

Our farriers do the horses in the barn (on cement) near the door. the barn is cool in the summer and has a decent cross breeze, and is warm in the winter. We tie the quiet ones, and I hold the bratty ones (loop the rope around the tie ring and hold the end).

My farrier shoes where ever I can get to him.

Often I travel my horses 50k and meet him on the side of the road where I offload and he shoes them there.

Now and then I can actually get him to my place then he shoes them in my shed.

If I travel them the hour and half to his place he does them in his yards.

A GOOD farrier is hard to find and the travel is worth it to not have lameness issues.

Mine are done in the barn lot in the dirt/grass. I don't have a concrete pad or that's where they'd be done.

Mine likes to do the horses under the big old oak tree in my back yard. Then he walks them to the concrete drive way to make sure they are even.

Butch usually does them out in the sunshine on the gravel drive with us holding them. If it's raining or really hot he goes under the carport. Then he watches them walk around.

Mine prefers the basement of my two story bank barn -- nice and cool and concrete as well (so he can see if everything is even). He prefers that I hold them.

The mare care pens if it rains (they are covered) - the lawn under a tree for shade if it doesn't..

I was going to say something cause my farrier is kinda cute, but.... I wont

He does my horses trims under my covered washrack on the concrete with the mats. But even before I had that, he would trim wherever. Under the tree, by his truck. I cross tie one (he likes to move around) hold the yearling, and the other two ground tie and dont move an inch unless the flies are bad and they seem to come out in swarms when he starts trimming. Wet hay and hoof trimmings are great for bringing every fly in town to my barn.

MY farrier is a pretty easy going guy, he'll do it just about wherever. The barn, outside, the indor, wherever is most convienient at the time.

anywhere except with my Hessen!

haha, my farriers would rather be any where in any conditions than with my Hessen, a 16.2 portly wb who leans on them, pulls on their belts, sniffs their hair, etc. altho he is getting better after 7 years!
but I've been lucky, at all barns except one we had concrete, and 3 we had indoors, and only one had the outside on a rubber mat with no fan.
in summer it is best to have barn aisle with fan. we've had that at 3 barns. that means shade, and out of rain, and pretty good breeze conditions.
