Suggestions please

I want to start doing Moon's feet myself because he will let me do much much more than he will the farrier. On top of that I have much more time to just sit and mess with his hooves so am not worried on the time it takes me.

I just use a rasp because I can honestly not get a set of nippers through his hoof wall. I'm trying to be conservative with his feet until I get the hang of it for now. My farrier won't be out for another week or so but wanted opinions from y'all.

*please pardon the messy frog, I didn't mess with it much* After quite a bit of rasping. sorry about all the dust, kinda happens where I'm at this time of year. lol

What I worry about is it looks like his toes are long and the angle isn't right like more toe needs to come off...but he doesn't look to have a lot of toe to take off from underneath if that makes sense. Its also hard to determine his natural pastern angles.

Good example why it is so hard...lol

Front view. Not a lot of flaring but not perfect either.

I dont know, I just wouldn't go rasping away if you haven't been fully trained. You can really mess up a horseand make them off balance and not 'wear' equally when they walk, make them lame etc .............

On the plus side, I so wish my horse had 1/2 the hoof wall you do !!

Thank you for your concern! If it means anything his hooves look better right now then they did. lol I rasp his hind feet quite a bit because his inside walls wear down much slower than the rest and he can get long and way out of balance. I'm sure when I see my farrier soon he will give me tips and be happy if I can keep up with him myself with just checkups from him. I'm trying hard to keep them level...thats a big foot to work with.

My farrier has problems with him because 1) he wiggles (but not with me) and 2) he has more hair than we know what to do with so the farrier has a hard time getting him even anyway. I think thats why his toes look long is because they don't look it unless you can manage to keep his hair wrapped up long enough so has been unintentionally allowed to grow that way.

hehehe.. you wish it until even your own farrier has a heck of a time getting his nippers through them. Many a cuss words have been said over these feet.

Thank god your only using the rasp. I've heard of soo many people messing up there horse's hooves because they decided to cut away instead of rasp. They look great though and if the ferrier is coming out to see him then you doing a little hoof control I don't think will hurt. It looks like you did a great job

Howdy! I'm a barefoot trimmer. Here's what I see:

1st picture; looks like the foot is balanced, but difficult to tell. The hoof wall needs to be rolled to prevent cracking/chipping, it's called the mustang roll. Also the frog needs to be trimmed a bit, remember it should be the lowest point on a foot.

2nd picture; you're right the toe needs to be taken back a bit. You can do this by rasping straight down from the top of the foot. If you look at this picture you should be able to see the flare of the toe. I wouldn't remove the whole flare as some horseys will become sensitive. If you trim just his toe a bit every 2 weeks, you'll be amazed at how fast that flare will disappear. Above the flare is where the hoof wall is tightly attached to the inner hoof capsole.

3rd picture; good looking foot! As you said there is a bit of flaring especically on the left side of the picture. You can address this the same way as above. It looks like he's not standing square, but I know how hard it can be for us to take good pictures.

Overall good job and good for you!

How often does your farrier check your work? How often do you trim?

Here in NC most of my clients are on a 4 week schedule during the summer, but I do have some on an 8 week schedule. It's neat how every horsey is different and even every foot.

Keep up the good work!
