Wd-40

It's been very dry of late, here in the Southeastern US. My horses hooves are very dry and starting to crack. I had heard from a trainer and other horsey friends that they used WD-40 to keep them moist and to prevent cracking. Anyone else heard of this and/or used it? What were your results and what do you think?

I have heard of it but have never tried it. I've had real good luck with taking the soil around the water tank and giving it a light shovel tilling then keeping it wet and muddy. That way each time they drink thier feet get a good soaking.

I do use hoof conditioner around the coronary band-hoof is already grown out and dead..
BUT I use natural oils or lanolin based items.
While I will use a petroleum based product like WD40 on an unsightly tail mat-on a hoof not so much.

I wouldn't use a petroleum based product on my horses feet. There are ALOT of topical natuaral oils <for horses> out there for dry feet. RainMaker is a popular one. I would go that route and not the WD40.

i read somewhere.could even have been on HT,that motor oil is the best they found to keep feet from cracking and drying.wd40 could do this too.keeping the ground by the water tank wet doesnt do anything for my horses.but alot of people swear by this.try wd40.it wont hurt them.did you know,if you get stung by a bee,put wd40 on it.after 30 min. the sting is gone and next day it will look like a little bite.if wd40 dont kill me then it wont hurt horses hooves.personally thou,i use the rainmaker.

Thanks guys, this gives me food for thought. I need to do something, it's just that I board her out and I don't want to make extra work for my BO. She is so good to me and I am 9 hours away so it's not like I can do the work myself.

What about a daily hoof supplement like Farriers Friend or say O,ega Horseshine? The quality of the hoof comes from the inside out..I am using O.H. right now and my horse came to me with a split halfway up her front hoof. The new growth after on month on this is amazing.
just a thought.

I would also recommend the Omega Horseshine. I use it on all my horses. My farrier commented on how nice my rescue minis feet are growing out since they have been on it(about 2 1/2 months). There feet were terrible, never touched, cleaned or trimmed. Now growing out healthy. Makes their coats soft and shiny also

Wd-40 is not a lubricant, it's cleaner for metals and plastics, I would not use it on my horse's feet. I do have great feed and keep the ground soaked around the water tub.

Umm I could have sworn it was a lubricant..
I use it on sticky padlocks and gate hinges and all kinds of stuff like that.
Maybe you have it confused with something else?

Well, here's more for you. They recently had to change the ultra-secret formula for WD-40 because it turned out to be seriously toxic. It is now less potent with far fewer carcinogens.

The formula is, however, a closely guarded secret. Much like the Coca-Cola executives, WD-40 executives can not all travel in the same airplanes, etc.

I've heard of people rubbing WD-40 on their joints for arthritis... and they swore by it, too.

As for feet, as TMom pointed out, the hoof is dead - good feet come from the inside, with lots of sulphur-containing aminoacids (cysteine and methionine), or other sources of bioavailable sulphur, which are used to build the keratin of the hoof. Plain gelatin works well - or can also use flavoured Jello (my farrier swears by this). However, cheap-o, lanolin-based hand cream does help, when put on the coronary band. Petroleum-based products are not recommended, because they actually encourage the growth of horn-eating bacteria. Also, when put out in the sun, mineral-oil (petroleum) based products tend to actually dry out the hoof.

To this day, my 93 year old grandmother, who is the daughter of a farrier, swears by putting bacon grease on a horse's feet. I tried it, but it stinks - and attracts ants !

Maybe not bacon grease, but there is a product by Anvil Brand called Kevin Bacon Grease. I used it when my farrier complained about how dry and hard the hooves were. Next thing you know, I had nice, moisturized feet. The barn cats didn't bother them and the ants didn't swarm...the dogs, however, did lick at the container!

Sometimes, no matter how well you feed them, the tootsies need a little moisture.
