Quicked horse!

Hi everyone. My farrier came out to trim horses yesterday, and he accidentally quicked my mini on his left, front hoof. It bled some, and after I got the bleeding stopped, I wrapped it for about an hour to make sure it wouldn't start bleeding again. He's in a stall now, and stayed there over night. He's pretty sore on that foot now, and was wondering.....since he's a mini, can he have bute to help take the edge off the pain? He weighs about 300 lbs, and until his hoof grows back out, I just want him to be comfortable. I don't like seeing him hurting. I plan on keeping him stalled for a few days. Any advice on what I can do for him would be greatly appreciated.

Also, before everyone says I need to find another farrier, I do believe this was an accident. I groom dogs, and as hard as I try not to quick a dog when cutting their nails, it does happen. The farrier said if he's still sore in a couple of days, he will put some shoes on his front feet, until that hoof grows out. He felt pretty bad about it.

I have had that happen to a mini I had. Not the farriers fault. I don't know about the bute. Sounds like you are doing the right things. Give the mini a hug for me.

Absolutely we bute our mini's when they are in pain. They have no problem with the medication.

When you wrap, you can pack that foot with sugardine also, it will help some drawing out the pain as well as keeping it from becoming infected and aid in healing.

Good advise, And thanks for not blasting your farrier with both barrels. Accidents happen from even the most skilled professional. Hats off to him for stepping up with the offer of shoes to make it right. All you need is a little time and your little guy and he should be fine.

My farrier cut one of mine too short a while back. Not quicked, but to short for him (the horse). He was so gimpy. I called him and he let his apprentice do the trimming. I was never ugly to him, but I did inform him that this horse was gimpy and he has never been this way before.. He offered to come back and he lives 2 hours away and shoe him. I tild him I did not want shoes on him, that he did not need them normally. He said I could use venice Terpintine (sp).

Does Venis terp work too?
