FEEDING the Foundered Horse

Ok Mods if this is not the right place move it, please.

After a horse has foundered, what feed should be used? This is after given approval by the vet.

I have never had a foundered horse, so I am sure that there will be other much more knowledgeable answers, but I just wanted to mention that I have seen Seminole and Purina both have feed that is specifically for horses that have foundered previously.

I would assume the vet is going to suggest keeping the protein level low.. yet you also have the issue of putting weight on him as well..

Beet pulp with a good hay I think to start with.. no alfalfa though.

What has the vet said about a senior feed..

You really want to watch carbohydrate rich grains, lush and wet pasture.

Usually a mix of dried forage (excluding Alfalfa) grasses are best.

Seminole in my opinion has the absolute best laminitis and founder prone forage feed out there. I have seen this stuff work wonders and is worth every penny to take out the worry and wonder. If you are interested, it is called Happy Hoof.

My senior feed has 14% protien. What he was on was 10% protien. The vet sis say that he really could not ase all of it on just being overfed that weekend we were gone. He thinks it was a load of stress from his injuries, the trailer ride, the 3 abcesses and being overfed that one weekend. So this is why I am really at a loss.

Poor boy is so patient and kind. He is a big ol trooper. He is so gallant. I cll him Lancelot Yes we have to slowly put weight on. This is where I want to make sure he gets what is needed to continue on hs road to recovery.

Let me check, with the split with Spillners at the first of the year, they may have changed the name.

This is what I have started him on......
http://www.triplecrownfeed.com/safestarch.php

It is a forage, But I need to give him his suppliments too, and that is hard when not mixed in a feed. Beetpulp is low in all that stuff right?

happy hoof or safety first

happy hoof or safety first, the same product from seminole, or anything like that, it's chopped hay/straw.
no grain.
no grass
no carrots or sugar.
no starches.
and read up about fructans and sugars in grasses, etc. it's amazing, time of day and time of year can apply.
and no steroid shots they can cause laminitis.
look on the coth forum under laminitis or founder.
too many treats and vegetables including carrots have sugars and starches in them.
you can feed hay, but check which kinds. we have coastal bermuda which is not rich.
must lose lots of weight and the happy hoof/safety first or like that will do it, all fiber, and keeps gut working so you won't have colic, and gets the weight off fast,.
go to seminole webpage, it's worlds best feed page or seminole feeds, and get the 800 and call the nutritionist.

seminole

seminole split with spillers so they don't have happy hoof, but you can either find happy hoof elsewhere, it comes out of maine or some place, or you can use the seminole product which is almost exactly the same. seminole now calls everything "wellness" or "safety first".
use the chopped forage for up to a year, when horse is skinny (gotta get the weight off those sore hooves) then you can go to a low starch feed like performance or something.
no grass!
no treats unless no starches.
and yes, you can do without most supplements, unless they have no starch and no sugar, like get a good hoof supplement to try to grow out hooves fast.

He is a lot underweight already. He suffered blown tendons six months ago and I just got him in a few weeks ago. So he cannot afford to loose anymore weight. He is a perch/fresian cross. He is also under vet care and specialist farrier care. I just wanted to let you know, if you are not familiar with his story and thank you for the suggestions.

Cameo...It is now called Safe and Sound. 40 lb bag forage. Spoke with nutritionist and recommended maybe fedding it 60/40 with the Safe and Lite pellets. Both recommended for Founder and Laminitis prone horses.

The Safe and Sound also has a mixed in multi-vitamin pellet for overall nutritional balance.

I did see that on Seminols website.

I am getting beetpulp with no molassis in it. He gets Probios and the GLC5500 every day. So I got to have something to mix with.

So we need a feed that is low starch and low carbs?

Make sure with your vet, but movement if tolerated is good for blood flow and important to heal laminie. Don't see why a 10 - 15 minute light walk on good flat ground should hurt.
