Re-section on a rescue mare. Kinda Graphic

This mare was in so much pain we only did one foot today. This mare is a TB 7 Yr. old and was headed to slaughter from a "fancy" TB farm.

Poor thing Is that you in the pic doing her feet? Did you give her anything for the pain?

More pictures to come when camera battery is charged. ( took so many we only posted about 1/3 of them) She was a "throw away" after winning races at the upper allowance level. She was the favorite in her first stakes race (dad is multi million dollar winner, mom was multiple graded stakes winner) and was in the lead when she bowed a tendon. They bred her and she foundered after foaling. She was then kicked out to pasture and forgotten for nearly a year. When they brought her in to decide whether to breed her again or not, (heavy sigh) it took 1 1/2 hours for her to cross 2 acres! After winning the owners all that money, they decided that she wasn't worth the vet or farriers bill to try and fix her and she was headed you know where. I even offered to do her for free as seeing her like that made me sick. When they refused to give her the time she darn well deserved, I talked to my wife and she agreed she was worth trying to save and I told them I would take her. She was so sore she fell down in the trailer and wouldn't get up. She was in pain and drugged up to the point where she fell down twice while I was working on her foot. (look at that hanging head) Afterwards she was actually walking better on that foot already.
Going to wait a day or two before doing the other foot. Should have more pics of the finished foot soon as well as picks of the other one while it's being done. Keep her in your thoughts as she goes through this. Even if she doesn't make it, she is such a sweet mare she is worth the trouble. Our fingers are crossed for a happy ending to this story.

You are truly an angel for trying to save her. I wish you both the best. So sad her owner let her suffer and then just wanted to dump her.

Oh wow. That is some kinda hard work. Does it really help? How long does it take to heal? What kinda pain meds or knock out drugs did you use for her to tolerate this procedure? This is a last resort tyoe of procedure, right?

I hope you don't mind me asking the questions. I am just really interested.

Poor girl, but bless you and your wife for saving her. My thoughts and prayers that with her feet getting proper help she can once again be happy and healthy!

This is very interesting in light of the video I saw yesterday about the grey gelding. I hope you'll be able to keep us up to date with pictures of the healing process. I would be intersted to know how she does with both feet re sectioned. I am betting on immediate improvement in mobility. Are you only going to have to do the front? The shoe you used looks like a regular shoe just nailed on backwards, is it? Do you have a special shoe for this? What meds did you treat her with to heal the foot? In the video the farrier used something like thrush buster and another med that I don't remember the names of, do you use the same things or something completely different?

I gave her a cocktail of Ace and Rompum (spelling?). Not because the actual procedure hurts, just so she could tolerate standing on one foot while I worked on the other. At some point someone worked on her as you can see from the hard roll on her toes, though with the length of her feet it was some time ago. Hit two huge abscess pockets that were old. They are easy to see in the pics. Then two more active ones. You can see in one pic how the track ran straight up the length of the wall and out the hairline. It drained for several minutes, can't even describe the smell and I'm pretty used to stinky feet after 16 years. The entire front of the hoof wall is completely detached. She acts like she feels much better today already. She is more alert and standing with much more weight on the re-sectioned foot this morning. Keeping our fingers crossed for this gal, she is a real trooper. I plan on doing the other foot in another day or two if she continues to seem more comfortable. I used a 3 degree bar wedge pad instead of impression material as it seemed the more support she had on her frog and heels, the more relief she got. ( I taped various pads to her foot and walked her around to determine what she was the most comfortable in before I nailed on the shoe)

Her back feet were neglected also but cleaned up fine with just a trim. It's just a normal shoe turned backwards, nothing special. Being up in the middle of nowhere, with her in such bad shape I made my own meds instead of waiting to order whatever he was promoting. Have had success with infected feet before by mixing up a combo of Coppertox, white vinegar, and Betadine. Will try and keep you posted on her progress, and update her pics as we go along.

I wish I could find a farrier with your knowledge close to me. I think that it is great what you are doing for her.

Thanks, sometimes I wish the little voice in my head would just shut up. I see something like that, and I can't get it out of my head. The more I see what people are capable of, the more I like my critters. Don't know how someone can just throw away a life that gave them so much without a second thought. Makes me want to do creative things with my turning hammer! Like use it on something a bit softer than a steel shoe if you know what I mean.

I understand completely I feel the same way. These same people don't care about the human life around them either, believe me I know my house is full of thrown away children. I just think God that he gave people like you the kind of heart that he did so there is someone that cares.

I've heard of re-sections, but I've not seen pictures in progress until now. Please keep us posted. Bless your hearts for trying to save her. She must have suffered terribly.

My understanding is that you have cut away the detached portion of the front of the foot and the new foot that grows out will have the coffin bone properly placed inside it? Then, you gradually trim the heel, quarters, etc. to match this new foot??? I'm sure there's a better way to explain this!! Is that the concept??? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
