Cold Hosing The Hoof

Do you and if so how long? This is for Founder and Abcesses. Does it help?

I do until the horse's hoof has cooled down a bit and the pulse has lessened- I find that it helps.

Yes, it helps to bring down the temperature which can damage laminie. Cameo, if you can get him to put his foot into a pan for about 15-20 minutes even better. I find a pan about the size of a cat litter box or even one that you would use to do dishes in the sink works well, fill it with enough water to get above the coronary band. Easier than trying to get there leg in a bucket.

Seer, he will not do it. He is soooooo much better but I wan to help him anyway that I can. Especially with the 3 abcesses and he was beginning to founder.

This is what I did. So tell me if I did it wrong. I got the water hose and stood there (bent down at his feet) and hosed him 15 min on each hoof. I also worked it up and down his legs too to help with his other injuries.

Perfect, just a suggestion as some will allow for soaking. Soaking the legs with the cool water as well will also offer soothing relief to him givin his injuries.

Can you put him in a paddock with a small plastic pool full of water? My horses will not let me soak their feet, but will put their feet in the plastic pool all day long. I don't know why this works but it does for me. usually there is 2 horses cooling their legs and feet off in the pool at least twice a day. I have had to replace the pool once and will probably have to do it again soon as Rookie always tries to lay in it.

Huh... That is a pretty good idea. I really don't want him to be ina very small area. We are dealing with Blown tendons in those front legs too. He may have realized today that the water makes his feet feel better. So I am going to try that. I will need to get rubber though, that big old draft will crush the plastic

yes it helps 20 minutes at a time as long and as many times as you can. and if you can get ice and ice it down with a diaper and ice , etc. or if horse will stand in a bucket of ice and water.
check the coth website for laminitis/founder tips.
good luckk.

Cameo, you can even get those rubber feed pans to soak his feet in. Deep enough to cover cornonet band and he can't tear in up. Whenever I've had a horse with an injured/swollen leg I hose for 15-20 twice a day (because I don't live where my horses are). Or more since your guys are right outside.

If you are just soaking the hooves get soaking boots large size and fill with ice then water. Works on laminitis. Nice part of the boots is that if you can tie with a hay net you can soak 2 hooves at a time and multi task.
Works well for other soakings too.

I work from 8:30 to 4:30 m-f. On weekwnds I can cold hose more. Week days one good time a day. His hooves were alot cooler last night when I cold hosed.

Also the boots, he has shoes with pads on and supports out of the back to stabalize the injured tendons. That does give me an Idea if something should ever happen with the others. I have never been through this founder and abcess thing.

Had a thought Cameo. Do you have a spot that you evenly bury on of those rubber pans in so that you could just walk him right into it? That way he doesn't have to actually have his foot picked up to place it in the pan. I know how hard those big ole draft legs are to pick up.

You could also try epsom salts in the water if you soak his feeties.

Good Luck

I was out there a few min ago giving him his yummies for the morning, his meds and all that. He has no heat this morning at all in legs or hooves. Yaaayyyy. I know we are not totally out of the woods yet, but it is progress. That is all I can ask. After I cold hosed him last night, his mane is so thick, I braided it to keep him from being so hot up under it. It is 10 times thicker than a normal sized horse. So the Bute is kicking in.

Yes seer I can do that.

That is what works best for some of our less cooperative ones.. for some reason they don't seem "scary"..

That bond for both of them has to make them feel better emotionally .. He is in great hands Cameo - I can't wait to see just how far he has progressed by the end of the summer..

I am going to post some pics today of the difference in him since the first day I got him. It is so much it isn't funny. Thank you Gbar for the vote of confidence.
