Silly Do Be..yes you should watch the whole thing with sound
Very interesting thanks for posting.
Sometimes you have to open that foot up so the yuck can get out. No two ways about it.

after watching some of the video w/o sound, I have to explain my previous statement.

When I read re-section, I thought reply-section, and I didn't understand how that pertained to hooves or why you wouldn't want to do it.

Now I understand, it's Friday and my brain has already shut down

Re-sections are never fun but are often a last resort. It is definitely major surgery and not for every founder situation. I'm getting a mare that has had everything but this tried on her and she has been given to me as a last chance before she is put down. She should be here in a day or two and if my brain cells fire correctly and I can figure out the **** camera we have, I'll take before, after, and follow up pics. Just holding my breath that she can still stand up when she gets here.

Sometimes the resectioning is the only relief these Laminetic horses get. They are in extreme pain and drug hardley touch it. This relieves the pressure of the abcesses caused by the dead laminie. It's not pretty but the horse feels much better. Each Founder case is alittle different. check with your Vet and Farrier..

Um, I have a hard time believing that is the same horse 8 weeks after. It is NOT something I would even consider - EVER.
I guess I will have to re-watch it, but I see nothing good from that.

Well sometimes a tough infection will just keep recycling under the hoofwall.
Ever get an infection under your fingernail? To TREAT it you must be able to get INTO it.
It is not to be entered into lightly but it does have it's place.
Why do you not believe that is the same horse 8 weeks later?
A horse will improve dramatically as soon as a simple abcess blows. The pressure is off and exposed to air the germies croak off-they live in the presence of NO oxygen. No reason to disbelieve a major abcess case would not improve quickly after finally being opened up.

Re-sections are not something you do on any old horse with a case of founder. There are many ways to attempt to treat founder. The farrier in the video states that this horse has been suffering for 4 years already. Sometimes other/better ways have already been tried and have failed. If it came down to it, is it better to give your horse one last chance to be comfortable, continue to let him suffer on a daily basis, ( the horse in the video has been crippled with pain for nearly 1500 days in a row with no relief) or just put them down?
Watching videos of heart surgery is not pleasant either, and there are many other ways to try and treat heart disease, but it's the only thing that saved my mother. If everything else has been tried, why would this procedure be so offensive if it's the only thing left to save your horse?

Big Brown had re-sections done on both front feet.

I've seen them do amazing things to help the hoof re-grow.

Don't knock it until you've had experience with it.
