Finally got the barn bound horses trimmed Photos Added

There are two horses that live 24/7 in the barn. I've been fussing about them for a while (previous posts' advice much appreciated).

Today they both FINALLY got trimmed.

I've got tons of photos to post tonight but I did have to share the comment made by the junior farrier; he said the hooves were awful and it was making him literally sick to his stomach to deal with them. I think this was a combination of the stench coming off (which I can still smell, gross) and the condition of the hooves (quite literally rotting out from the inside out).

But the good news is that I had gotten a handle on the thrush for the most part before today, and since I now keep their stalls maintained and their hooves picked out, hopefully I can keep on top of things. My next goal is to get them out of their stalls for turnouts.

Good things for horse hooves! Photos tonight!

UPDATE Photos
This is the first hoof as the farrier begins the trim. The hoof has been scraped out somewhat.

Same hoof almost finished.

All of this either came off, or out, of one hoof.

Front right hoof. This is the leg with the bowed tendon (the reason the horse is 24/7 inside). This hoof was in the worst condition; couldn't completely trim or excavate, and needed medicine.

Same hoof finished.

Horse number two before any trimming. Note the long toes. Even after, the toes are still long; farrier couldn't go as far back as needed in this trimming.

One hoof on horse number two. This one's in the barn 24/7 due to founder issues.

Here, I'm holding one of the trimmed off pieces from horse two. The hoof isn't chipped; it was rotting out from the bottom up, and the inside out.

That is a good thing you are doing........Keep up the good work!

G-Bar..that paste works well, especially under pads if you have a horse that has to wear them. The tip ob the syringe makes it easy to get down into the cracks and crevices.

Thanks.. no pads, just an older mare who is so prone to thrush. She has been great this spring.. but with all this rain, I want to be prepared..

I thought I would put that on, with a gauze pad, and some vet wrap and tape, with her in a dry stall for a couple of days if it gets that way this year.. I am glad to know it works well..

You are a wonderful person for wanting to help, hoof care is so important and you may have very well saved them from alot of pain and possible irreversible damage....My hat is off to you.

Bless you for stepping in on their behalf. Getting these horses outside and moving will be very beneficial to the health of their hooves as the more exercise they get, the more blood flow to the hooves. The more blood flow to the hoof means better health and greater opportunity for the foot to heal itself and to fight off the infection. Keep us posted.

there is somthing even better for Thrush it's actually for dairy cows, it comes in a tube like wormer - Dry Cow - that's the name of it. My farrier told my barn to use it. it works great.

OxyTetracycline is a cattle antibiotic as well.
The horse system is not used to the cattle meds-really works on those things.
Thanks for the info ladies!
