I cannot comment on the founder or the shoulder as I haven't had those problems yet, but I hope that everything does go well and you have done right by getting both farrier and vet out. That way all aspects are covered.

Don't you just love great farriers!! Mine are that way too. I think what you are doing for him is fine, you're doing the very best you can. Thankfully, I haven't had to deal with founder yet but from what I've been told by my vet and farriers I think you're BO is right, it doesn't sound like founder.

I know that it sounds like we're attempting to "diagnose" here, but what we're really doing it sharing thoughts/possibilities and experiences.

Funny, the first thing I thought of when I read your post was a shoulder issue, too. But who knows? None of us are there looking at him.

You've done great to cover your bases in diagnosing his issue, and I hope it turns out to be a minor one.

Good luck!

I personally do not take it that way and I am sure that aguestnga doesn't either. This is very informative. Does sound more so something other than hoof, but I have never dealt with one of these problems. I also thought that one would founder quicker than 10 days.

I'm definitely not taking the suggestions as gospel diagnosis(es?)...but to draw on others experiences and see what worked/didn't work for them. I've been here two years now and these people have kept my hair on my head and my horses' heads ABOVE ground more than once!!!

LOOOOOOVE MY HT FAMILY!!!!!

Keep those thoughts and ideas coming!!!

a digital pulse can be felt with an abscess as well as with laminitis. Laminitis *is* a lameness issue and an extremely severe and potentially life threatening one at that, but if the horse is walking around with a relatively normal stride and not rocked back off his toes, and it's only 1 foot, that doesn't sound like the presentation you expect with laminitis

Well, I'll do the happy dance that it is most likely NOT laminitis but understand it could still be serious.

I need a win here...

I would also look for something above the hoof, but thats just my experience.

I hope its only a small problem.

Interesting, I better have a word with my vet!!! lol
I'll find out more information, As I'm still quite sure they cannot founder from that kind of feed.

All though it doesn't sound like Founder, I just have to add: My vet has seen horses founder almost instantly and some Founder up to 2 weeks later after getting into something they should not have. We were told this because some dim-witt decided to give our Mini a flake of Alfalfa hay when infact she had already foundered from it with the previous owner.

Well it sounds like you had good news from your farrier today!

I was thinking shoulder as well as I went through some similar a couple of years ago. He was sound and then the next day gimpy as all get out, it did end up being in his shoulder.

alfalfa is very rich, and it is easy for horses to founder on. We've had people board with us that they fed an already fat-out of shape horse this all the time, and too much of it .. guess what .. the horse foundered. Needless to say the no longer stay at our barn.

GREAT NEWS...

IT WAS AN ABSCESS!!!! Farrier came out and tapped all over his hoof and no reaction but when he went to pull the shoe, Dallas reared up and let out this awful moan; could tell it hurt like hell!!! He gave it one more tug and out came the "stuff"...everywhere. Gross.

It was the result of a hot nail which the farrier was scratching his head over b/c it was in the white line and all but who knows...he didn't charge me and he ground out a channel in the shoe and in D's hoof so we could flush it easily.

I am soooo relieved.

GROUP HUG!!!!!
