** UPDATE** NOT A Broken Coffin Bone In The Hoof

Has anyone ever dealt with this situation?
Red got injured last week on a trail ride and has been terribly lame since.
I had been in communication with the vet immediately afterwards and as per his instructions,
we were treating it like it was a stifle injury,
given that Red wasn't bearing any weight on the entire leg, and holding it off the ground,
essentially not using it at all.
As well, he has been on Bute 2x per day since.
Finally got the vet out to have a look today and we ruled out hip, hock, and stifle, he feels it is in the foot (as the foot is quite warm) and he believes Red broke his coffin bone.
Does anyone have any experiences with this??
If so, I would love to hear any and all information.
Thank you

Oh No! So sorry to hear about Red. Hope all goes well and he has an uneventful healing. Don't have any experience with this sort of thing, but prayers from here for good news.

I'm sorry, poor Red. Thinking that Kanoo will have words of wisdom for you.
I can only say I'm sorry and hope Red is better soon.

Thank you so much.
He's spoiled rotten, so if that counts for anything, he's getting plenty of TLC.

PS. I contacted Kanoo immediately, and her support and friendship to me was INCREDIBLE!!
Thank you, Kanoo

I would schedule a x-ray I have no advice other than that. I have never delt with anything like it. Good Luck. I hope and pray that Red heals up fast! (((HUGS TO YOU AND RED)))

Ny friends horse broke his coffin bone when he was young. It healed a milimeter off and he was fine to ride but is now a pasture pet at 14 years old. He'd been on and off constantly through his life and now he is just consistently lame unfortunately.

Do get an X-Ray and go from there.

Several years ago I was given a beautiful standardbred off the track in Orlando Florida. He had a broken coffin bone. We had to keep him in a bar shoe and he had 6 months of stall rest. Then 3 months of paddock (small lot) time, then 3 months of pasture time. He was totally sound after that. He was 11 years old when he broke his coffin bone and I had him for several years, and then retired him with his old trainer in Florida when we moved. He wanted him for his grandkids to ride.

I figure this is my 'sign' to go ahead and retire my Reddy.
World's BEST trail horse.
I'm not in any huge hurry, but if something should 'pop' up on my radar, I'm not going to be afraid to give it some serious consideration either.
Hubby has been WARNED, and is ON NOTICE, there is going to be a new horse on the farm.

Redboy--

If and when it is determined to be a broken coffin bone PLEASE consult Esco Buff.

http://www.escobuff.com/

On his service and specialty page he has photos of my girlfriend Lorre Browns Donkey that he worked on and Lily the donkey is sound with NO coffin bone!!

Seriously--please consider it and I can get you in contact with Loree to get her opinion of Esco.

Good luck honey and I really hope is is something a lot less severe!!

(((HUGS)))

That may be true redboy. Stately turned out to be a wonderful trail horse for us, but he could never race again.

I've worked with a lot of TB's with coffin injuries. It all depends on the severity of the fracture and what type it is. Some can be rehabbed; some can't. Only an xray can tell you that. It depends on the horse's personality too. A horse that can be stalled without tearing down the walls does better. I've seen horses come back almost 100% and others be put down. There are many high priced TB's standing at stud with coffin breaks. Best case would be a minor injury, months of stall/paddock rest and then used for walk/trot classes or leadline. I'm sending you positive thoughts and praying for the best outcome.

What does your vet have you doing in the mean while til the farrier and x-rays are taken? Just bute?

I'd think that soaking the hoof would be a good thing to do as well.

Maybe he is gravelling? Some times gravel abcesses look like broken bones.

A friends mare came back off a trail ride the same way. It popped in about 2 weeks.

From my understanding.

Gravel is usually an abcess that blows out some where in the hoof wall.

My friend's mare abcessed at the coronary band. Some blow out abcesses at the heal.

People say it is from getting little stones, etc. in the white line of the foot. Others say that it is an infection in the hoof.

The horse is generally very lame until the abcess pops and afterwards you can definately see improvement.

Soaking the hoof and using hoof savles or liniments may help speed up the process.

My friends mare was on bute and bantamine, as well as being wrapped (just incase of a broken bone or bad soft tissue injury).

I'm sure others on here can explain it better.

LOL so "gravel abcess" is redundant?

Hey...who was it who was looking for a name for the alleged Dun colt?

How about ReDunDant

I'm sorry this happened to Red. I would have the Xrays taken and go from there.
