Hoof conditioner

Has anyone ever heard of using old car oil to put on your horse's hooves? I heard it was just as good as Rainmaker. Any opinions on this?

Don't,don't,don't do it. Used motor oil has tons of contaminates in it. NEW motor oil would be better, and, I still would say DON'T. Most of the time a sealer does more good on the outer wall than oils/conditioners.A sealer will help reduce systemic moisture loss. This is generally what oil based conditioners do. Corona on the hair line will do more good. If feet are realy hard, pack w/ a packing like Forshner's a couple times a week. If you feel you need a hoof dressing just buy the cheapest you can find. Plain ol pine tar, mineral oil, baby oil, any thing but used motor oil.

Rainmaker stinks........use Absorbine Hoof Conditioner. Use something that is made for horses on their feet.

Thanks ! I will throw the oil out ! We have so much rain that the place is at is muddy. He has black strong hooves. But he has a hairling crack all the way up his front hoove. He has front shoes. I try to keep a conditioner like rainmaker on a couple times a wk. but some times its so muddy it is hard to get on. I will try the Absorbine , i am out of the rainmaker.

Since I was a wee little girl ,(and that's been some time ago!!) I've always used Hooflex on my horse's hooves. Now I use Horseshoer's Secret as a feed through supplement as well as the Hooflex. The trick is to be consistent. Gotta get those feet painted regularly!!!

I have my horse on omega horseshine, his hooves don't chip, dry out, anything, and he's barefoot. I use hooflex once and a while though.
