Question Removing a Shoe

Cheyanne lost one of her Natural Balance shoes a few days ago, and since my horses are out in a large pasture and sometimes go tearing around, I'd like to get that remaining shoe off. I do have a call in to my farrier, and am waiting to hear back from him, but since they aren't actually due for trims for a few weeks yet, I'd really just like to get that shoe off. It would be great if he can come by to do it, but if he can't, we have some farrier tools (rasp, knife, nippers) as well as all kinds of regular tools, is there a way to do it ourselves?

AlbertaGirl,
Are the horses going to be trimmed on the next cycle? If not I'd wait for your farrier to tack the shoe back on. If your going to be trimming, then cut/rasp the clinches. Then pull the shoe by lifting it off the foot, starting at the back w/ pulloffs or old nippers. As the nails come loose, pull them out of the shoe.hope that helps.

All 3 of my shod horses will be having their shoes pulled for the winter, and everyone will be getting trimmed when I book him to come out in a few weeks. So, wouldn't be much point in having a shoe put back on her this late in the cycle, not to mention we have snow already

Thanks bnt, I will give that a try tomorrow unless my farrier by some chance calls and is able to come out

Just a hint, for a newbie at it, a regular metal file will cut the clinches faster, and the hoof and your knuckles less than a hoof rasp. An old nipper or puller is really needed, but I'v pulled a shoe with regular pliers. I just pulled the nails one at a time, starting from the toe and alternating the sides all the way back.

Well, did you get it figured out? Pulling a shoe is something every horse owner should know how to do (IMO) so if you haven't done it yet, next time your farrier is out get him to let you pull the shoes. You'll learn and practice under his supervision and you won't be so worried next time you have to do it.

You betcha, on the 17th we got it off in a few minutes time . Cheyanne was lying down when we went to take off the shoe, so my SO started working on it with her laying down, but we got her up for the majority of it, when she really would've preferred to keep snoozing
