What's this?

I went out to look at a horse yesterday. He's due for a trim at the very least. He's about 10 yrs old, Appy. He's mostly just sitting out in the pasture. Owner says she saw this that morning and only noticed it b/c his back leg was stocked up from sitting in a stall waiting for me to arrive. She wanted him to stay clean. This wound (?) isn't sensitive to the touch. He's not lame. Sorry for the bad pics - it's a back hoof and he obviously didn't like to stand on 3 legs. He's big, fat and lazy. Not my horse so I had limited access to cleaning the hoof or making the horse stand.

Yes, it looks like he cut some part of his heel, but would be easier to tell exactly what happened in person, I can't eactly tell where each of the pics were taken relative to the rest of the hoof.. In the last hoof is that the back of the frog near the cut? It looks like an odd-shaped frog dunno...

That is the frog Im pretty sure...it looks like injury...it may be a older injury since it isnt sensitive....although it sure looks like it would be. Def dosnt look good looks like he either got it caught on something and ripped it or he sliced it on something... He walks fine? no bobbing of the head or limping?

I think I would pass just looking at that horses hoof, that frog is very uneven... leads me to believe he's had bad heels for a while.

New pics

They sent me some new pics as they are going to call the vet anyway and they had to clean him up:

In person it almost seems like this is a growth coming from under the frog at the heel. I know Apps are prone to cancer

Looks like proud flesh that has grown on an older wound.

Sure glad the owner is getting a vet out! I would love to hear his opinion.

To me, it looks like part of the heel bulb was sliced open, not noticed, and developed infection. I looks like the frog is about to fall off (probably had infection underneath it), and the would itself has proud flesh and granulation tissue which tells me it went un-noticed for some time. It looks shallow, so probably not overly serious, but I would be concerned about how the hoof grows back. Any time you get a cut on the heel bulb or coronary band, the hoof will grow in weak, and sometimes mis-shapen. What were your intended uses for this horse?

Looks a whole lot like what I found on the heel of an App mare I went to look at in Georgia last year. I forfeited my deposit and came home!

Had one of these on my old App years ago. Took forever to heal. It is proud flesh, from a post-wound infection. Takes time and effort to cure.

Our vet excised the "bad stuff", and then we treated the wound, kept it dry and clean, and medicated, for weeks. Being where it is, there is not much circulation there, so it takes forever to heal. I said that before didn't I?

I'm old, I can repeat myself.

I'm also too old and fat to bend over and stand on my head to doctor a horse's heel twice a day every day.

I don't think this is unique to Apps nor is this a place where Apps "get cancer."

Looks nasty. I sure as hell woiuldn't buy from a person who claimed not to notice that... they're either not being honest or very innattentive.

I gotta' agree. Old wound, proud flesh, infection. I sure would have my vet and my farrier check that one out.

I agree with old injury and not being maintained at all in a long time.
Now I would buy him and put on a diet and let a proper farrier and vet care take care of the hoof. in 6 months a new horse will evolve.

Are you interested in buying the horse?
If so, I would have a vet and farrier evaluate. Then I'd decrease the offer by several hundred.

It does look like an old wound that went untreated, unnoticed and now it's infected. Might not heal up that bad or be a huge deal, but I wouldn't want to buy a problem.

I agree...I def would have a farrier and vet look at it before you buy...if your still interested in after looking at that.

Seems an odd place for a tumor, don't you think??
I don't know, but, 'left untreated, old infection, proud flesh' would make more sense to me, JMO.
I would certainly want my vet and farrier to address this issue before I'd consider any purchase of this horse.
Hopefully now that its been addressed, it will get the attention that it surely needs.
