I was thinking tumor because of the way it is so smooth on the outer part of the heel, the inner part looks like it is ulcerated by the middle of the heel. I would have thought that if it was an old cut with proud flesh it would be more proud on the part that is sticking out where the skin is smooth. Tumors can grow anywhere but it would be good to get a vet opinion!

Looks like trouble to me. I agree with the poster who said a old wound with proud flesh and a absess under the sole a frop which will come off soon. I would wait to see what the vet says before I bought him.

That's a strange looking injury or whatever it is. It looks like it's pushing out of his heel and frog.

I'm going to have to comment on the poor farrier work on this horse's foot. You originally mentioned that he needs a trim. He does need the flares at the side nipped off a bit but his toes are too short, the angle is way off and he has no heel. His lack of heel makes me wonder if he injured himself because his skin is almost touching the ground. I doubt it would take much to injure that area.
Sorry, but I've seen too many horses ruined by bad farrier work not to mention it when I see it. I'll tell anybody if I see bad work on their horses. I realize this isn't your horse but you mentioned that someone asked you to come and see it and I'm wondering if you mentioned the condition of his hoof or hooves if they're all like this one.

No,I don't agree. There's no way it can be said that the horse has had poor farrier work considering there is no history present in this thread. Sometimes the owner is at fault due to poor husbandry.I have seen far to many horses ruined this way.

As to the foot itself, the angles are fine so far as can be determined by the one picture that shows a portion of the pastern. Toe length is NOT to short and hoof appears to have good, natural concavity and sole depth/thickness. Heels actually need trimmed back more.

To OP's original question about the foot, possibly a sarcoid/tumor but most likely proud flesh from an injury(not low heels). This would be the vets domain.
