Great info Seer, thanks for sharing!

I haven't had a colic problem for years, but growing up we lived in a VERY sandy area, and we dealt with sand colic far too many times. We did all we could to keep feed off the ground and out of the sand, but I had one Arab that was very prone to it (this was before the days of SandClear type products).

Thankfully I haven't had to deal with that for some time now, although as it goes with horses, I now have one that's prone to tying up and needs a special feed regime due to it There's always something

I wanted to come back and mention that what we had thought was colic in Cricket, was actually a low grade virus that is going around. I am thankful to know it wasn't colic!

Over the years we have had several horses colic at or immediately after a show. Somehow, I have the feeling that inadequate water intake has been responsible in these cases, as the horses were ridden in many classes throughout the day.

Colic prevention tips

My compliments to the first poster for such a comprehensive writeup on how to avoid colic.

There are a few more tips in section 2 of http://www.wowhorses.com/horse-colic.html

In particular, the study (colic risk factors and % increase in colic risk) quoted at the bottom of section 2 I think is really interesting.
