How long should beet pulp be soaked?

Okay- I hear so many different things. 24 hours, 12 hours, 2 hours min. At my barn they soak the beet pulp, maybe 10-20 mins. Well all they do is put the beet pulp at the bottom of the bucket, then the grain at the top, then water it all down. Sometimes I add extra water because I feel it needs it. I am switching to a barn that only feeds safe choice, so he will be weaned off of beet pulp, but I am curious about all the myths. Can anybody clear this up for me? Thanks.

Most people I know who use it, soak it overnight, but I don't know if there is something magic about that time period... I have never used it.

How long you soak it depends on the temperature of the water, and the room temperature. THe hotter the water/room the less time it needs to soak, but too hot of water will kill some of the nutrients. Depending on my schedule, I either make it will warm (not hot) water and soak it for 20-30 minutes, or I make it a few hours in advance and use cold water and keep it somewhere cool and away from flies. If you soak it somewhere hot, then it can go bad quite quickly, so you dont' want to leave soaked beet pulp in a hot area for longer than needed.

It depends on what form it comes in. I use to get pelets and it needed to be soaked for 5-6 hours to really soak in the water then I started getting it shreaded and I only soak it for a few min as it soaks up the water quite fast. I have at times even feed out with no water at all. However I like to add the water to help get the fluids into the horses and they like to play in it.
